UPDATE:
I have decided to add Tyco slot cars to RETRO TYCO, a decision that did not come easily. However, my goal is to keep it as simple, and retro, as possible, as Tyco did market both their HO-Scale trains and slot cars together - many in the same set.
I visited a local toy shop the other day, and although the owner did not have a great selection of Tyco slot cars at the moment, he did have a surplus of slot car track from various manufacturers. Ultimately, he gave me an excellent deal on a small oval of AFX/Aurora slot car track (he didn't have Tyco,) and I plan to use this slot car track on RETRO TYCO by means of an elevated road. Although the track will not be purely Tyco (the same can be said of the train track on the layout,) all slot cars and power controls will be 100% Tyco.
Again, I do plan to keep Tyco slot cars to a minimum, since trains will have the ultimate hierachy on RETRO TYCO, but slot car/truck fun will add to the retro-ness, which is exactly what I need.
Stay tuned for future work.

UPDATE:

Yep, the slot car track has been installed on RETRO TYCO! This afternoon, I received assistance in cutting 10-12 9inch pieces of wood (all from 2 long left-over wood sections), and tonight, I alone tediously nailed all sections of the slot car track oval to the 9inch wooden supports, and then - upon clearing the center of RETRO TYCO - proceeded to lift the slot car track into place. Lastly, I hot-glued each support down to the platform. The final result, a sturdy oval of slot car race track (made by Aurora/AFX), which will be perfect for a small Tyco slot car/truck racing section.
What do you guys think? And, to the "pros" at Slot Car Racing, how does this look? To me, it is #Road&Rail to the supreme.

In addition, all of my Tyco locomotives and rolling stock acclimated perfectly to being stored beneath the elevated slot car track, and honestly, where the locomotives are sitting, it kinda looks like a roundhouse.
I already obtained 2 Tyco slot car controls and 1 powerpack at the cheapest price available on Ebay, and (stay tuned) got my first slot car -- really a truck! I'm so excited to see RETRO TYCO coming along so well, and truly appreciate all of your support and continued inspiration in this endeavor.

Interesting question.....and I have no idea yet. Guess if it don't work I will be destroying everything.
I just need to wait until Monday/Tuesday for my Tyco controllers, powerpack, and slot truck to arrive, and then I'll know.

UPDATES:

A lot of stuff for RETRO TYCO arrived today! Let's get started....
First off, I received the final 2 license plates I created using Build-A-Sign.com -- The "Retro TYCO" plate was hung appropriately in the center-front of the layout, while the Tyco official train "slogan" plate was hung in front of the powerpack (thus relocating the other "I'm Psycho for Tyco" plate to the right side of RETRO TYCO.) I really think these signs/plates add character to the layout, and serve to show my Tyco-MANIA.

Next, I received weight pieces from thesiding thanks to a recent trade - and upon installing them on my Tyco Operating Crossing Gate, I'm pleased to state that it is now working (well, working...as best it can. )

Also from thesiding, the 2nd topper needed for the Billboard Steam Whistle accessory - looks sharp.

Lastly, I finally received the for-parts Tyco "Warbonnet" Santa Fe GP20 that I won at a cheap price on Ebay last week. After switching trucks, replacing a bottom plate, installing traction tires, and lubrication, my Chattanooga GP20 with PowerTorque is Now Working, and very well at that!! Thanks to a fellow Tyco Forum member for the shell w. plastic handrails, which I mounted on MU-2 style trucks a while ago.
Here are some shots of Chattanooga GP20 #5628.

Yep, hope it makes its way to an exhibit, sometime. Too nice to keep it under a basket, that. I am intrigued at the elevation scheme of the USA 1. How, if, are you going to scape the vertical sides?

Thank you guys I truly appreciate all of your comments, and do look forward to the day when I can possibly "display" RETRO TYCO.
LOL, Microbusss, I might have to start an order of "I'm Psycho for Tyco" license plates.....if more individuals want them, I can turn it into a business.
Thanks again, Chops!!!

UPDATE:
Well, nothing new has come for RETRO TYCO....except for the fact that I received my first Tyco slot truck on Monday -- this nice black w. flames scheme on a Tyco Peterbilt cab. Now, I just need to be patient and once my power pack and controllers arrive, then I will finally be able to determine if my track even works.

UPDATE:
Received 2 Tyco slot car controllers and 1 Tyco powerpack plug-in today in the mail, so after work, I started installing them on RETRO TYCO's slot track. Unfortunately, I realized the hard way that the Tyco wire-plug-ins for both the controllers and the powerpack were a bit too large for the Aurora/AFX power track's outlets. :( So, I had to safely shave the rubber on the ends of all plug-ins with a scraper, and then finally each one fit tightly.
After getting the powerpack and controllers to work properly, it was time to test the slot truck. Worked perfectly, except I noticed that on both the inner and outer track, the truck stalled on both straight sections. Turns out I had a small amount of corrosion/rust on the metal "rails" inside the slot track, so with the scraper, I removed the corrosion, and ended up getting near perfect contact.

Also, thanks to a recent transaction with Chops, I received this awesome Tyco '57 Chevy slot car!! It runs well on the outer line, and has knocked off my Black Peterbilt slot truck a few times.

It took me a little bit to control both slot vehicles, as I have understandably never had slot cars before. After both the Peterbilt and Chevy flew off the curves quite a few times, and acted as Kamikazes -- propelling off the track and smashing into train cars below due to yours truly......I finally got the knack to control them. Now, I just need to obtain more Tyco slot vehicles (more trucks for sure!) and maintenance both the present slot track and vehicles.
I also plan to devise a way to hang the controllers safely on the wooden-support pieces.

Would be interesting, except my slot car track is elevated....so it is exactly 9 inches above the railroad track.

Clever modification to the Aurora controllers. I am fiddling with trying to see how to best install my Tyco USA1 track, too. Is a bit of a challenge! Spent six hours trying to straighten out my Tyco inventory- feels like I hardly made a dent. Hopefully more progress in days to come. The round house effect is a good one. Maybe some straight sections of track to suggest the effect further?

UPDATE:
Today, I received this large Tyco US1 Slot Trucking lot in the mail, that I just purchased 3 days ago. All of the operating accessories I will be listing under the Trading Post, so if you are interested, then please read my post for trading. I have currently retained the bag of gravel and pipes, but if I decide that I cannot use them on RETRO TYCO's slot track, than I will be putting the whole bag up for grabs as well.
After a small bit of cleaning, and lubrication with Liberty Oil, both the Green Dump Truck and the yellow Gravel Tractor-Trailer are running well on the slot track!!! These hallmarks of Tyco's US1 line of products are the perfect complement to RETRO TYCO, and I'm so excited to now race these trucks!

Check out this video featuring all 4 of my Tyco slot vehicles, operating on RETRO TYCO's slot track. By the way, I need a name for my slot racetrack.......any suggestions? Perhaps PRO RACETRACK, named in accordance with "TycoPro."?

True, but I prefer the serious "knocking off of other vehicles better" -- or I also enjoy racing the vehicles and making one the winner and the other, the loser.

Thanks for the suggestions, Chops! So far, I like:
- USA 1 - Retro Roundabout - Gold Coast Freeway - Pro Expressway
But, now I'm starting to think up new names myself.......
- "Psycho Freeway" - "Tyco Raceway"
MUST DECIDE.

RP,
Great working fitting that in. If you want to drive or race the cars you may find clip on barriers an asset, at least on the outside curves, but all round (inside and out) would not hurt.
Almost any make will fit and do the trick and it will help avoid the death plunge......
Second, as has been suggested, if you elect to switch to US-1 gray track you can have train type throttles built into one of the straights, which will give constant speed motion in either or both directions on each lane.
The only downside of using US-1 track is that you are using AFX 12" I think, and gray US-1 12" curves are VERY hard to find, although black Tyco Quick Klick will work with US-1 and can always be painted. Glad to see you having so much fun!

James, thank you for the complements!! Yes, I have found that Tyco slot vehicles are awesome retro fun, and...fit right in with trains. Yes, I am considering obtaining barriers for the slot track.
Yeah, about track differences.....I am definitely going to keep my AFX/Aurora black slot track -- since I put so much effort into getting it set up on RETRO TYCO, and would burst into tears to see everything come to ruin to exchange trackage.

RP,
Fair enough. Tyco, AFX or Life-Like clip on barriers will all fit, but just make sure that they don't encroach too much on the road. The Life like ones are the widest and unless they lean back outwards can foul passing US1 stuff sometimes.
Here is another idea that may help: instead of having the terminal rail on the circuit - make your own. I solder wires to the undersides of the two rails on each track. These could go straight down to pass through the board and out of the way.
Next run the wires from each lane to a two pole two way switch. To this you can connect the hand throttles like you are currently using and a constant speed controller like they supplied with US-1. You can then switch between the two supplies: racing or roadway!
Just an idea!
Enjoy!

James: Thanks for the advice on barriers....yeah, upon analyzing my slot trucks...it seems that some guard rails would take too much away from the road. I will definitely develop something.
Also, interesting suggestion in regards to re-wiring the terminal rail to 2 controllers and a US1 constant speed controller.
Completely random...but I'm kinda liking the US1 highway signs I'm seeing on Ebay - are these compatible with AFX/Aurora track?? Because I think they snap-in to the underside of Tyco US1 track, but am curious if that would still work properly with AFX/Aurora slot track (like I have.)

RP,
Yes they would, as AFX track is the same width as US-1.
There are two types made - you will need to ones with the reinforced base clips, to help them stay up on your high level circuit. These are also higher too. The earlier ones won't clear the car transporter!

Let me ask this, like RP, I am adding in a small USA 1 circuit. The small bit I have so far is gray track, and indeed the passage is a two way street. Then I picked up a few more straights, but they are black Tyco strips. Will they be electrically compatible?

Chops,
As far as I know, Tyco only made 2 basic types of slot car track. Tyco Pro came first and then later they switched to Quick Klick. US-1 uses the latter but as you say, it is Gray. This is exactly the same as the black stuff apart from the Color. So you can join and mix them as you wish. Some track parts such as large radius curves and the railroad grade crossing are more common in black than gray so many people buy black ones and spray them to match US-1.
The only word of caution here is that as US-1 is getting on for 40 years old now, the electrical connections between sections can sometimes be a bit ropey. Cleaning, tweaking and treating with contact oil will help, but if your track length is large then add more feeds.
As I mentioned earlier it is best to make your own connections, especially for the extra feeds by soldering to the exposed sections of the contact rails underneath a length of track. If you have any fears and concerns practice doing this on a broken length of track first! In my experience clean the area to be soldered first by scatching with a screwdriver or fibre brush AND use a little flux too. Don't leave the iron on the contact point for too long either!
Good luck,
James

Thank you for the suggestions, I shall proceed with caution, and perhaps some paint to unify the color.

Interesting combination of slot track, Chops! Please post photos of your most recent work under the "Tycomania" thread - I would love to see it!!!

I'm glad to see that video, it gives me just enough steam in my cylinders to get out of this chair and fiddle around a bit with my USA1. That neon green dump truck has a fairly good low end speed, but still it makes quite an impression salloming about the curves.
The track with which I corresponded to with James in the Day, above, is exactly what you have their, plus the gray track for the original USA1 set up. Having just a little more available real estate, I wanted to lengthen out the run just a tad bit and found the black track on line for not too many clams.

Thanks Chops, and good for you! The Tyco Green Dump Truck is one of my best-running slot vehicles, and stays on the elevated slot track pretty well. In regards to the Tycomania slot track....will it be elevated, and if so, how is the project going so far?

Well done guys,
Great video and a good runner.
Don't forget that underneath the skin, all US-1 vehicles are essentially the same mech (even the wrecker and fire engine) and can all be made to run well.
Important things to focus on are the pick ups that need to be clean and well adjusted so that all four tips touch the contact rails. Also ensure that all the tips are rut free... There are replacements available on e-bay which are worth thier weight in gold and are easy to fit. Tires are available too.
Secondly de-fluffing the mechanism and oiling it all round is really good and highly effective. To do this you need to use a small screwdriver inserted between the rear tunnel weight and the chassis to slowly prise the weight out. (On tractor chassis the weight is the pivot for the trailer).
The amount of fluff and hair that accumulates here is fightening and it can wrap itself around the worm, gear, motor shaft and the axles internaly and behind the wheels.
Clean it all OUT! Any sluggish runners are suddently transformed and all will run as well as RP's green tipper!
James

Thanks Highwayman!! Also, good advice on cleaning any crud out of the gear mechanism.

Got these 2 awesome Tyco Peterbilt slot trucks in the mail the other day.....with one missing 2 rear tires and the remaining tires on both trucks entirely dry-rotted. Luckily, a lot of 16 US1 trucking silicone tires arrived yesterday as well (which were ordered from Ebay at the cheapest available price), so I gave both trucks all brand-new tires.
Lastly, I lubed both slot trucks and after a few run-arounds on the slot track, they were performing well. Both have light capabilities, although only one's headlights actually work. These Tyco trucks are nice, with my favorite of the 2 being the light blue one with black streaks.

The only problem I foresee is that....the holes in the rear of the trucks where trailers would be attached, are too narrow for my US1 trucking gravel trailer, and I'm afraid that the 2 trailers I successfully won in-auction on Ebay at a great price last week, might not be compatible with these trucks.
Is there any way I can widen the holes? Already thought about a drill, but I DO NOT want to risk injuring the gear mechanism below. Anything where the end result will look smooth, and not like I hacked-at the back of the truck? Any advice would be appreciated.

As a rule, I think it is safe to say that only US-1 trucks will only mate with US-1 Trailers.
If you think about the design of a US-1 tractor and trailer they are designed to pick up well, stay in the slot when reversing and have added weights to help with traction.
Both TYCO and Aurora did trucks and trailers with magnetic chassis and I faintly recall some trailers having magnets too, but the trailer couplings were very different to US-1 and not compatible at all. the pivot pin was narrower.
I vaguely recall that some of these could reverse but others won't, but I need to check.
I know the Ideal Peterbilt from the Knight Rider race and chase set (see image in the slot car of the week thread) was designed not to have a trailer but I am not sure if Tyco or Aurora produced rigs like that too.
I have a few non US-1 trucks and trailers tucked away upstairs and need to dig them out to take pictures later in the week. Sadly tomorrow is probably too busy.
It would take a lot of work to change a non-US-1 rig to pull a US-1 trailer, so my suggestion is don't. Only a real US-1 rig was designed to push and pull the trailer reliably, coupling and uncoupling at the bespoke docks.
