UPDATE:

First of all, I sorted through my 2 small containers of HO-Scale accessories so as to retrieve all of my Tyco signs and remaining telephone poles. I will work on installing signs throughout RETRO TYCO next, and will need to first obtain more telephone poles -- my plan is to install them all around the inside of the railroad track (as seen in Tyco's vintage catalog train set image):

Next, I worked more on developing the open region in the center of the layout into a train-set like storage area for Tyco locomotives and rolling stock, which I have assembled specifically and solely for use on RETRO TYCO. I do anticipate filling those blank spaces in the locomotive storage area soon! Stay tuned!!

Whoa, thanks for pointing that out - I will have to remove it....

How many telephone poles you got?

UPDATE:

Today, I received the lot of Tyco trucks/livestock trailer that I won last weekend.....and using the parts from the yellow Dodge cabover, I repaired my red Dodge truck. Both the green Kenworth and red Dodge cabovers can be seen at the piggyback terminal.

I also received the Tyco Alco Santa Fe "Super" C630 #1102 today, and after installing traction tires, lubricating the gears, and making a few other small tune-ups, this C630 is running smooth and can really haul! Below are some shots of it on RETRO TYCO.

Thanks!! Yes, the Revere hopper was made by Tyco, and I obtained it in a trade with microbusss.

UPDATE:

Just received the Burlington Northern RF-16A "Shark" today, and after shell-cleaning, horn and coupler replacement, this BN Shark was ready to roll. Inspecting the traction tires, it appears that the previous owner already installed them (that look like Calumet's) not too long ago, plus all of the gears were oiled well too! Final result - excellent operation. I look forward to switching out the Santa Fe C630 on the weekend, so that Shark #415 can take its place at the helm of a freight haul. This is my second Tyco Burlington Northern Shark, and will be assigned to duties on RETRO TYCO solely. *Shark Master Riots*

UPDATE:

After receiving a new Surebonder Dual-Temp. hot glue gun on Monday, I decided it was time to put the new glue gun to the test by affixing Tyco signs to the layout. Sure enough, the new glue gun performed nicely, and nearly all of my signs were installed (only 4-5 were placed back in my accessories container, for future use.) I really like the "retro" look of these HO-Scale signs - as they continue to add to the 100% Tyco "feel" of RETRO TYCO.

The Shark Master strikes again! I like the glue gun idea,
one can strongly affix something, but salvage it later.

Has MB lost his mind?? What did you trade for that
Revere hopper, a pound of gold???

I am thinking what a great shot it would be to see
the orange gon, the Rever hopper, and the Bethlehem
Steel against the autumnal foliage of EVRR.

Thanks, Chops!

I have conducted so many awesome trades with Microbusss.....that I forget what I traded him for that hopper. Probably some neat Matchbox/Hotwheels cars that I no longer used. Either way, I never had a Revere hopper and now I do, so.... Perfect for RETRO TYCO.

Interesting request Chops, in regards to an Ephrata Valley Railroad freight haul shot. I will keep it in mind for a future TF Railroader News post.

UPDATE:

For starters, I exchanged the black Goody's Hairband traction tires on my Silver Streak Alco C430 with clear Goody's, which have made all the difference in traction on RETRO TYCO. Here's the Silver Streak resting in the yard with its matching caboose and Tyco compatriots.

Secondly, I also received the Popsicle Express Reefer and Dots 40' box car today in the mail & couldn't wait to give them a shot on RETRO TYCO! These iconic pieces were obtained at great prices (around $6.00 for the Popsicle Reefer, and $3.00 for the Dots box car, which was originally missing a truck --- not counting shipping.) Both Tyco pieces have corresponding "playware" from years of use, and now will live out the rest of their existence in the gentle care of a Psycho Tyco Collector. Check 'em out.

P.S. while random, my favorite flavor of Popsicle is Chocolate. What about you guys?

P.S.S. Remember how I stated that I obtained a Tyco Del Monte box car? That should be arriving in the mail tomorrow, so please stay tuned!!

Interesting about the clear hair bands working that much better.

Rivarossi uses some sort of clear rubber for traction tires, and they work pretty well. I wonder if clear Goody's are the same stuff.

UPDATE:

The Del Monte 62' Box Car arrived today, and is in EXCELLENT condition -- looks mint!!! Here it is, already part of the freight haul on RETRO TYCO (by the way, thanks to this layout, I am truly enjoying the chance to imitate real railroad switching.) I did some complex "breaks" in this consist so as to get the Del Monte box car where it is now, position speaking, in the line of billboard cars.

Here's an overview of RETRO TYCO, now.

Lastly, COMING SOON! Tyco's signature Steam Whistle billboard accessory. I tried to trade or sell it, and no one was interested.....so, it will now be installed on RETRO TYCO.

Thanks, Chops!!! I consider that a complement, to have a Tyco Elder be so enthralled with MY work, a Tyco Newbie.

Speaking of bananas, I do need to get that Chiquita 62' box car......

UPDATE:

Well, this evening, I installed the billboard Steam Whistle accessory on RETRO TYCO. A fairly simple installation, it only took about 15-20 minutes, and then the sound of a steamer was echoing across the plywood platform....

Here's an iconic shot:

Here's my wiring work:

The only thing is, I'm still missing 1 top piece to hold in the second paper billboard.....does anyone have one of these things? If so, please contact me ASAP - I'd be willing to trade nearly anything small for it.

Then, I decided to take a few photographs with the intention of adding that "vintage" touch to them.....after downloading them, I edited the saturation, brightness, contrast, and midtone of the following shots, to give the illusion of RETRO TYCO, as it would have looked about 30-40 years ago. Enjoy!

P.S. I just obtained the S.O.S. 62' box car today, at a great price, in a mini lot with another car. The other was a LifeLike Vlasic box car, which I do not want. If anyone reading this is interested, then let me know!

UPDATE:

Received the S.O.S. 62' box car today, and it is in great vintage condition!! Here are 2 photos of it, now part of a freight haul on RETRO TYCO:

All I'm looking for now, billboard cars wise, is the Chiquita 62' express reefer, Pepsi 62' box car, and the Hunt's Chocolate Pudding 62' box car (while considering duplicates of some....) Of course, I would give utterly anything for Tyco's Oreo 62' box car, but apparently it never existed.

I am purposely limiting myself on Tyco's slippery slope, in only seeking certain cars which I like and/or were staples of Tyco's HO-Scale train production.

To be honest tho, $12.20 is high for that car. You could probably get it in the $3-$8 easy. I picked mine up on ebay about 4-5 years ago for about $6 I think.

By the way, here's a lot that's right up your alley:

Interesting....I have not seen many Tyco Hunt's Snack Pack Pudding box cars on Ebay....and the cheaper ones are defective in some way (in fact, there are 2 others currently listed on Ebay, and both were in the same price range, but one has all broken stepladders, while the other has numerous nicks n' dings.) I guess because it was Mint-In-Box...and I like Chocolate Pudding...that I thought I obtained it at a decent price.

Thanks for the link to the Ebay lot.

The Pepsi car alone, NIB, I've seen at $40. If no one else bids on this,
it could be a very decent package.

UPDATE:

For starters, I ran my Silver Streak C430 this morning on RETRO TYCO, and after about 5 minutes of operation, gray smoke billowed out of the cab..... Sure enough, the motor burned out and it just had new traction tires installed. I tried to do a switch with a GP20's PT trucks that I had, however, the transfer was not successful due to gear issues. Silver Streak C430 has been removed from the layout for repairs (temporarily Out-of-service.) I think I will just invest in a cosmetically-better Silver Streak C430 sometime in the future, and simply sell this old one.

Check out the PT motor from the original Alco Silver Streak's trucks, which was cooked. Yikes.

Next, I also removed the Chattanooga GP20 from the layout - it always gets caught on a switch track for whatever reason, and my troubleshooting left me with no answers. I will try to get PT trucks to replace the older MU-style ones, sometime in the future. Or, I may just obtain another Chattanooga GP20 in great shape, and dummyize mine.

Thirdly, in order to complete my dummy Midnight Special Sharknose, I need a SILVER truck cover. Does anyone have a spare?

Santa Fe C630 #1102 is seen operating on RETRO TYCO, hauling the majority of my 62' box cars.

Lastly, the Ore Dump Car is part of a freight haul, for the first time.

Still waiting on other Tyco supplies (from trades) in order to continue work on the layout (such as adding telephone poles.)

Well, I was wondering if the Gray Smoke Phenomenon would
ever catch up to you. There are a number of DYI videos about
how to overhaul a PT motor- I did one myself and it lasted
for about three yards before gray smoke started pouring
out of the windows, port holes- for a second time.

Time to time I see guys posting articles about using
the motors off of CD Roms and rare earth magnets.
What in the world is a rare earth magnet???

I am sure you will persevere and prosper, none
the less. BTW, great avitar, a good double
entendre.

Thanks for the complements on my new avatar, Chops!!

UPDATE:

Received the Hunt's Snack Pack Chocolate Pudding 62' box car today! Woops. Looks like I put it back in the box incorrectly.

Also, I got these 2 Tyco Santa Fe F9A's in the mail today - thanks to a great deal on Ebay. The seller had them listed for $14.99, buy-it-now or best offer, with $10.00 shipping. I submitted an offer of $9.99, which the seller promptly accepted! Therefore, I ended up purchasing both diesels for $19.99, shipping included!!! The pair is Tyco Santa Fe "Warbonnet" F9A's engine & dummy #4015 & #4016. I'm currently working on getting them to operate in full force on RETRO TYCO, so stay tuned for further updates.

P.S. The F9A's were sent to me in an Autoloader With Cars "Brown Box."

P.S.S. I have also made 6'' x 12'' liscense plates with the "I'm Pyscho for Tyco" slogan on them, using BuildASign.com - with plans to affix them to the front-edge of the layout. I can't wait to see how these look!

Thanks guys!!!

UPDATE:

Hunt's Snack Pack Chocolate Pudding 62' box car, part of the latest freight haul on RETRO TYCO. This is literally my FAVORITE billboard car made by Tyco, of all time. *Shark Master Loves Snack Pack Chocolate Pudding*

Also, 2 shots of Tyco Santa Fe F9A's #4015 & #4016 operating on the layout. To read more about these, check out LOTW.

Actually, BnsfIA, these 2 F9A's are Tyco all-the-way, and were produced in the 1970's/80's. There are some key differences that seperate these Tyco F9's of the Brown Box Era with updated MU-2 style motors, from 1960's Red Box Era Tyco/Mantua F9's and the Mantua F9's of the 70's/80's era. I think I will create a post analyzing these differences, for the benefit of all, since in my zeal of becoming "F7-F9 Master" I have truly gained a wide range of knowledge on the subject.

So stay tuned!

ALSO, I was able to win a complete Tyco Clementine Gold Mine in box....which I will use to get my present Clementine Gold Mine conveyor (from Chops) into full operation! Image below credit to Ebay seller.

Interesting RP, I believe the MU2's used in those locomotives were supplied by Mantua, as they had the same style of motor on the Mantua line.
Tyco stopped using Mantua motors sometime in the late 70s before switching to their own brand (PT), then using Mehano in their final years.

Hmmmm, I can certainly testify that these MU-2 style motors very much resemble Mantuas....except the Tyco version in the F9's of the 1970's/80's is not as good as the Mantua MU-2 motors of the past, and traction tires are needed for a good operating experience. I sense that Tyco "cheapified" Mantua's MU-2 style motors.

Also, interesting to note that Tyco's Brown Box Era F9's did not have the PT motor right away......they must have been installed later.

As a follow-up, here's my design of the "RETRO TYCO" logo to be created into a license plate in the future....and hung on the front of the layout. What do you guys think? I made this in Google Drawings.

The custom "I'm Psycho for Tyco" logo license plates that I created last week using Build-A-Sign.com arrived, and yesterday, I installed them on RETRO TYCO.

Using paneling nails, I hung each license plate on the front of the platform, 6 inches from each end. I am impressed at how good they look!!! What do you guys think?

You may be wondering what the other sign is, hanging on the left-hand side of the layout. That is a metal version of a vintage Tyco catalog, that my parents gave me as a birthday present last year - which was found on Amazon.com. I'm pleased to see it finally make a good display!

More license plates are coming, so stay tuned!

Guess nobody liked the license plates. Oh well....Shark Master likes them, and that's all that counts! LOL

UPDATE:

Today, I hot-glued my Tyco telephone poles around the layout and down every section of track....and I still have 2 telephone poles left. These really add character to RETRO TYCO, and further give the impression of a train set table.

And, my Clementine Gold Mine now works!! The one now on RETRO TYCO is the one that I received from Chops, with needed parts added from the one obtained off Ebay. Giving up last evening, I did not return to the gold mine issue until this afternoon, and determined that if I lubed the points where the conveyor belt rotates at each end, and push a little bit at the rear of the belt when it gets caught in one point, I can then get the conveyor to work right. I mean, this accessory is roughly 40 years old, so, even if it gets a bit stuck at one point, the fact that it still works is a miracle. By the way, I'm loving all of these vintage Tyco accessories, with the Clementine Gold Mine being one of my favorites.

Lastly, my Silver Streak Alco C430 is now working! I left it sitting for about week or 2, and upon putting it back on the layout, it appears that it is not experiencing any more gear issues. Awesome.

RP,

This is neat. I like the b-day gift of a Tyco catalog. I'm surprised the pixels didn't get blurred when enlarging many times over. Did you have to scan with max pixels? Now that I've seen yours, I'm tempted to do something similar using one of my Gilbert catalogs.

You should do something for your car license plate so you can be advertising/promoting Tyco wherever you go! I don't know the license plate laws in PA, but maybe you could do something like those "frame" plates that dealers provide when they sell a new car.

Actually, I didn't need to create the Tyco catalog metal sign - it was already made that way, and sold on Amazon. Here's the Amazon page where these Tyco catalog metal signs can be found, there are 2 other types: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=tyco+metal+sign

In regards to designing a license plate for a car, that is a great idea, and one I will keep in mind for the future (I just have my permit right now, and no car.)
