Hello, I am new to model railroading, and am starting my journey with a Tyco Rocky Mountain set I purchased on eBay. The packaging was well preserved, but my locomotives engine is shot, so I am going to try and change that out with a more modern can motor. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hello! I'm Dave from Iowa, nice to meet you! Those Rocky Mountains had the infamous Tyco PT so good choice with the can motor.

Chops from El Paso- I've changed out the PT motor every chance I got. It is not too, too hard to find a decent MU2 motor from the older Tyco or Mantua locomotives in the ten dollar range. The MU2 can be identified from below by its distinctive motor frame, and is metal. I've picked up several MU2's in decent shape simply by shopping off eBay for them.
With help, I've had some strong Model Power chassies lathed down to fit the Tyco Shark Nose shells.
As far as a can motor, that would be a trick, as their is no frame, I think. None the less, there are some very clever guys in here that can do things that seem not possible.
I've often contemplated a tower motor, but am uncertain as to dimensions and attachment. Yes, but as Dave said, those PT motors are notorious. However, RP Model Railroads seems to have some luck with them. See his LOTW posting and his use of very cheap Goody's hair bands.
