Here is an interesting HO scale hopper that I picked up today when I bought a Gilbert HO set off Craigslist. The hopper is small, only 2.75 inches long, but is in great condition. There is no manufacturer name and I was hoping someone can tell me more about it. Thanks in advance.

Underside is metal:

The diecast bottom and the design of the trucks suggest MDC/Roundhouse.
It's a model of an ore Jenny. These haul iron ore, which is very heavy, so it doesn't take much volume to max out the weight, hence the small size.

Search youtube for vintage ore trains and you'll see some great footage of big Yellowstones hauling long strings of these hoppers.

These were very good running cars that are unfortunately no longer made. I probably have had about 30 of them over the years.
There are also similar cars by Varney that were all plastic. Those are not worth what you pay for them as they are too light to stay on the rails.

I have an MDC/Roundhouse ore jenny of the other style, want to pick up more. The car that Brian has isn't too far off of what is used today, iron ore jennies are capital o Old. Most are built in the 50s or 60s (if not before) maybe going through rebuilds in the 80s/90s. Roller bearing 100-ton trucks are a thing of whimsy, look up ore trains on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming and they're all riding on cut-out roller bearing trucks. I've seen evidence of cars built in the 30s (thought rebuilt in the 90s) in service into the mid 2000s.
sim-al2 Also since they cut track maintaince the trains had huge trouble making over the railroad by the end 純那 yeah They did a Rock Island volountarily

More shows A. the desire of railroads to save cost when they can and B. The sheer demand for the cars

It's the same reason why you can still occasionally find boxcars from the 20s (I think Iowa Interstate has a couple) in MofW service. Without AAR Interchange rules to hold to, they'll keep stuff going forever. Also, some important stipends to my claim A: This was on a I believe WATCO owned shortline B: I believe the car was scrapped a year or two later. C: It was rebuilt in the 90s, I imagine quite heavily.

you can greatly improve the looks of this car by removing the die cast underframe and "painting" it black with a sharpie.
