Can someone explain what double and single lead worms mean? Pictures would be a big help.
Thanks,

I don't have a picture to illustrate it, but a worm is like a threaded bolt. With a single lead worm, there is just one groove down the length of the worm and one ridge. A double lead has two ridges and two grooves. If you start at one end of the worm, and wrap a piece of thread around through the groove, all the grooved part of the worm will have thread in it on a single lead worm. On a double lead worm, it takes two threads to fill the grooves.

A single lead worm will rotate the worm gear by one tooth in a rotation. A double lead worm will rotate it by two teeth in one rotation, making for less gear reduction.

Hi Richard,
You can tell how many leads a worm has by looking at the end where the shaft goes through the hole. It is pretty easy to tell how many starts, especially of you have an AHM motor worm and compare it to a Mantua motor and worm. The Mantua has one spot where you can enter the worm, whereas the AHM has two spots. The AHM double start worm make for very speedy locomotives. This is kind of dumb for switchers, but what can I say. Some folks have replaced the AHM worms with Kato diesel worms which bring the switchers to a much more realistic speeds. The Kato worm seems to fit the AHM gear perfectly. I have done this change myself and was very impressed with the results.

A couple of questions:
1) Where did you get the Kato worms?
2) Did you have to change the motor mount to get the new worm and gear to mesh properly?

The first answer is easy, you can get the Kato worms on eBay pretty regularly and pretty cheap.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BRASS-WORM-GEARS-2-FOR-KATO-MADE-ATLAS-707305-HO-Scale/372043380135?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D41376%26meid%3D073b5fdf083d433a969b218086bcd576%26pid%3D100012%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D352091671011&_trksid=p2047675.c100012.m1985
Just do an eBay search for Kato worm.
The second question is a bit more difficult. If you use the same motor that came with the AHM loco, you probably do not need to modify the mount. The hard part is getting the old worm off the motor shaft. It will require a puller of some sort or a press, PLUS heat. The AHM worm is REALLY pressed on. But, what I did was to replace the motor, which complicated things. I can point you to what I did if you wish, but the job is not for the weak.
