I picked out this cool sky blue steam engine at my train shop when it became available from an estate lot purchase. I've never seen a baby blue engnie before.

That's a nice looking loco. I have to admit I like the look of pre-1900 locos.

What you have is an IHC/Rivarossi 4-4-0 of the 1974-78 period. They made 17 different versions of that locomotive. That one, Dangit, is one that I have not come across yet. I have most of the set.
This is an exerpt from the instructions listing them all. That is stock item #340005 of the set.

Boston and Maine GP 38. I do not find a corresponding paint scheme in the prototype. Actually the prototype scheme for this time period was rather anemic, so I dressed it up a bit. B&M did not run any bay window cabooses, either, but it is what I had on hand.

The ones you are wanting, are the 1974 production models. They have a black colored can motor in the tender. Don't get the ones with a open frame or silver colored can motor in them.

Ben, ever been to the V&T and the Nevada State Railway Museum? I've noticed before that you're quite a fan, and I think you'd enjoy those places.

Those Rio Grande units are really nice. Nice sharp pics too.
Here is my J.W. Bowker. It has the motor in the tender and runs very well. I did add a Tomar shoe on the tender and that helps with pickup.

Gonna add my 2 cents with more locos from the set that Jerry started.
The Hinkley locomotive.
The Bevington.
And the William Mason.
Can't leave Buss out of the deal. Here are photos of the ones you want.

no but I wannna someday! heck I'd ask Old Tuscon Studios about the REAL Reno loco tho! I'd restore it back to coal fired & run it on the real V&T after restoration! course I would make a fiberglass top that looks like wood to cover the coal
Well tomorrow I'll get the TYCO V&T I has but I lost the shaft that goes between the loco & tender!

Thanks for posting this info , Oldtimer. I didn't know what it was, but when it came into the train shop for sale, I snagged it, don't often see a baby blue steam engine! A rather attractive locomotive.

Some interesting info regarding Tyco steamers, on page 24 of the May 1975 Railroad Model Craftsman is an ad for a "BD-1 Back Detailer Set". The ad reads
"Fill those wide open spaces at the back of your TYCO 2-8-2 with ALL-BRASS parts from my new BD-1 BACK DETAILER SET. No drilling, no soldering; just cement the pre-formed detail in place. Includes cab floor with hinged tender apron, window sash with attached windshields, frame filler and supports, correct piping and engraved brackets to hold it. Three full photo pages of Heavy Mikados from 10 prototype roads for reference in modeling the real locomotives. $9.95
Don't forget HO ENGINE MANUAL for complete instructions on converting five steamers from readily available American-made engines. $4.00
Dealers or Direct, NJ Orders Add Tax. Harold Mellor, Box 194, Saddle River, New Jersey 07458"
sim-al2 Also since they cut track maintaince the trains had huge trouble making over the railroad by the end 純那 yeah They did a Rock Island volountarily

Several years ago I took pictures of a Mellor Back Detailer kit I had as well as the instructions that came with it. I have the manual as well, but not pictured. The detail kit is posted here:

Mellor had some products that I wish were still available. There was a kit to turn the Mantua Prairie into a consolidation. There was worm mounting kit for the Mikado and Pacific to allow remotoring with a variety of motors. Too bad I didn't know about that stuff while I was still around.

Cool! Nice to see it, so often do parts from obscure old manufacturers get lost to the ages. Among the pages of the 1975 year of RMC are assorted advertisements from tiny firms advertising HOn2 kits based on Maine 2ft gauge prototypes, the kits I believe were made up mostly of precut Northeastern parts and pre-formed grab irons and such. Also among the piles of ads was an advertisement for Penn Central gondola bodies by National Car Cast, google that and see how much you get. Little more than a few mentions and record of some eBay sales. One rendition of the "Boomer Trail" section showed off a tiny all-brass functioning tank engine built to "Omega scale" that was barely longer than a penny. Old, now forgotten manufacturers like these are oddly some of my favorite parts of these old magazines.

Nevermind! Forgot which issue I was reading (April). I may have fallen for their April Fool's joke... Omega Scale's fake as headlight fluid. The picture used a comedy large penny and an HO Westside Models SP Shop Switcher.

The problem with the Mellor conversion was the casting material was of a type that had no real strength and was flexible, bending easily. It would bend one way and the axles would seize to the casting, locking the drive. They had good ideas but just didn't make a good product. frank

Omega Scale. Headlight Fluid. Pretty good. I got pied in the face by Justin this April 1 past, with the big collection sale. Don't worry. Pay back is a witch. I am laying plans for April 1, 2018.
Wicked nice DRGW duo, Mike.
