I am planning a railroad yard. I know to lay ballast, but what I need to know is whether or not to lay a roadbed? I have seen layouts with and without on YouTube. Looking for suggestions.

As for me, I lay it right on the base board for yard tracks. I'd enjoy seeing what you are putting in. Please post pics!! I get a kick out of seeing other people's layouts in this forum- it inspires me to get busy. Frankly, seeing Rod Stewart's million dollar masterpiece just doesn't crank my flywheel.

Yard trackage is rerely ballasted. Yard switching was done at very slow speeds. A detail on a yard locomotive tender was multipal re-railers hanging from the bottom edge of the tender bodies. Yard track was ballasted with dirt. The top of the ties weer even with the dirt fill. If you can find old Atlas fiber tie flex track it is ideal for yard tracks. Being a third as thich as plastic ties it lays flatter and looks much better. frank

As soon as I can figure out how to focus my camera or get a new one I'll post pics.

I think all digital cameras on phones and the like are self focusing nowadays...sounds like a bad unit, maybe? I gave up on my Kodak digital camera and started using a discarded smart phone for photos because the resolution is so much better!

I am using a digital camera that is about 6 years old. If I can find the instruction sheet I could find out how to focus the darn thing. I am one of the few people in the world that doesn't have a cell phone. An expense that I can do without. lol

I went for years without a cell phone, now I have the same flip phone that I have had for the past couple of years and it gets the same looks as a candle stick telephone. I am not overly enthusiastic to spend thousands annually on phones, myself.
Anyways, you can probably find the instruction manual on line.
