Looking for a simple project that will add an interesting vignette to your layout? How about installing a section house along your railroad's main line.

Back in the day before railroad right-of-way maintenance was mechanized, railroad main line maintenance was handled on a local basis by "section gangs", so called because they were responsible for a designated 10 mile "section" of railroad. The base of operations for these local gangs was a "section house" that was usually located midway inside their section.

Section house architecture varied from one railroad to another and often times varied by location within each railroad company. At any rate the typical section house installation featured a small structure that served as an office, locker room, and storage area; plus a smaller shed that would house the section crew's hand car or track speeder.

If a railroad company's management was really frugal, often times a decommissioned box car or reefer would be used to make a "prefab" section house. These installations are my favorite because they typically have a lot of character and lots of modeling potential...

The images above show the section house facility I built for my railroad. Starting with a Tyco reefer car, all I had to do was add windows, doors, and a porch. Other details include a coal box for the stove, a smoke jack, a speeder shed, and an out house.

I completed this project in one day with parts from my scrap bin.

That's all there is too it, try building one for your pike!

well I knows railroads would use a passenger car as a temp station if the depot was destroyed or relocated
