during world war 2 london buses were modified to run on almost anything, and were painted a grey, and had a film of plastic on insides of windows to protected passengers as best they could, the white painted parts were to make it as easy as possible for passengers and motorists to be seen in blackouts, this bus is typical of a guy bus, from barking garage (bk) on route 23 from barking to holborn ken
The mass evacuation of London's children, hospital patients and expectant mothers took place in the first few days of September 1939. In four days more than 550,000 evacuees were conveyed out of the danger zone by London Transport vehicles, either to main line termini for transfer to trains or direct to the country. Some buses travelled as far afield as Northampton and Weston-super-Mare. Hospital patients were removed by Green Line coaches, which had been withdrawn a small city that London is,even after all the cutbacks,it still has just under 10,000 busses on its roads daily

the following picture shows how the bus was prior to ww2,silver roof as painted in 1939 a AEC STL class bus from Twickenham bus garage, brown roof as painted in 1940 again an AEC STL from battersea garage, which shows how busses were gradually phased into wartime colours, because no one thought it would last long?

here you go Ben,
to be noted are the headlamps which only allow a small amount of light out,to make it harder to be seen at night during bombing raids just in case you meant the second photo in the post, ken

due to bomb damage busses from the home counties were loaned to London transport to continue its daily work, this is one such bus,a Daimler utility bus allocated to Merton bus garage, hastily painted all over to save costs with no side adverts
even when the bombs drop, the mail and the milk was still being delivered
