In another thread or two, I wrote about the elusive Mantua/Tyco derrick car, in particular the PRR version.

Well, I created a Tyco-esque version of this derrick using two Model Power cars and combining them. These cars are repros of Marx cars, and not Tyco/Mantua, but what the hell.

Anyway, I picked up the PRR work caboose with the derrick, and the PRR flat car with the guard rails.

The derrick piece snaps off. So, I trimmed the guard rails on the flat car, and snapped on the derrick. I also screwed in a small eyelet hook into the base.

The derrick can snap back onto the work caboose whenever I want, so the only part that was permanently modified is the guardrails.

Here it is.

And here is what I did with the work caboose, using the rest of the guardrails. They are removable, so I can snap the derrick back whenever I want to.

Even then it isn't a true heavy lift crane until you equip it with outriggers. Even then you still need a work flat to transport cribbing. There is a lot more to be added to what little I have said.

I wasn't going for realism. I was going for Tyco-ism. Compare my model to Tyco's. When I want realism, I run my Athearn PRR derrick, which is much better than either Tyco's or mine.

Here is the Tyco derrick for comparison:
