Nice pieces, guys. Love that 4-6-0. Got this for a $1.50. Dummy trucks, going to pop in an MU -2 and slap on some horns. Just what I needed: another Tyco F unit. After I SWORE I was not going to buy any more Tyco for a while.

** My LOTW is a Hobbytown Baldwin AS 616. I got a second one from a friend recently. this one is PRR #8965. When run together they can defiantly pull a lot of cars.

This weeks locomotive is a recently acquired Mantua/Tyco General that I just finished getting restored. It is the Western & Atlantic roadname, and has one little addition to it. A factory installed smoke unit that works just fine. The units with smoke were only available factory assembled and painted. The roadnames available were the W&A, Georgia Central, USMRR and the CP.
Note the smoke unit stuffed in the smoke stack? These units only had 1 wire on them. The metal body of the smoke unit was the other electrical contact.

Pretty cool that thing smokes George. Be neat to see a video of that if it ever works out. Nice restoration.

The models equipped with the smoke units date from about 1962-63...

Lucky! I need one of those to run my switching operations, and the only one one eBay is $64 (I usually see them for ~$50) and includes a bunch of for parts flatcars I don't need. Also, if anyone is wondering, the Penn Line model resembles a 20-ton Whitcomb locomotive, not a "D-2" which I'm pretty sure doesn't exist. (I figured this out from comparing pictures of different Whitcombs on rrpicturearchives and pictures of the Penn Line model).
sim-al2 Also since they cut track maintaince the trains had huge trouble making over the railroad by the end 純那 yeah They did a Rock Island volountarily

The Whitcomb and the American take the cake! A triple bogie Heisler. That would be an interesting head end of a very long string of log cars.

Love those Cadillacs! I decided to go big and get this ATSF 2-10-4 with DCC from Bachmann. There is one #4 turnout on the mainline that gives it problems so I'm going to reconfigure the track with a #6.

I'm double dipping this week. I bought a junker hoping to salvage some parts. This is what I bought:
After inspecting it closely it appeared to be a complete kit. I began assembling it and this is the result:
A few final details and I have a beautifully running engine. It's a Mantua.

It is representative of the Whitcomb. The D-2 referrs to the production model in that the first issue was simply referred to as the Mini diesel. This is the first run... very similar, but the base was brass, the motor was turned inside the shell, 180 deg and the magnet stuck out the back of the cab. It was belt driven. Lastly, the shell was a lead based cast metal and therefore was quite soft.
In comparison to the later die-cast zimax model:
The original model was marketed as being able to navigate the worlds smallest HO layout. One set of wheels actually rode atop a silver dollar:
Apparently this mini layout used to sit inside the owner of Penn Line's office. This is one piece I would give a right arm for...

I recall Round House advertising their new box cab as being able to circumnavigate "a hatband." Great thread.

Sean, do you by any chance have the USMRR locomotive with smoke? If so, would you post a photo of it?
