Here is a old original Gilbert 6 to 14.5 volt AC locomotive, Gilbert number 200. It was made from the late 1930's to after the war in the 1950's frank

High speed boat launcher? Really small-scale (operation size wise) dockside switching? Some kind of reinforcement for the boards?

I had never noticed that before, and I've been shooting pics from this angle for the last twenty years.

My LOTW is this (what appears to be brand new) SOO Line 430. This one was fairly difficult to track down. I saw some one eBay over the months but they were pretty beat up. This one is nice and fresh out of the box. This one was the second to last loco I needed to complete my "Every Roadname of the Brown Box 430" Collection. I have all the locomotives just waiting on the last few to arrive!

Sean, I do recall there being a Spartan series of locomotives sold. There were a few old time locos as a part of it. I think the idea was for the modeler to detail and color their locos to represent period railroading on their favorite lines. Your mogul type fit this Spartan series. I would recall or imagine a 4-4-0 and a 2-4-2 as also being made. frank

Well he did say SOO. But all LOTWs are worthy of praise.
Mike are those F7s Mantuas? Do they have the dual MU-2s?

It is nice to have you back. To bad this one ( the Hudson ) is 6vAC and I cant run it. Somewhere in this house is a Gilbert 6 volt power supply. I hope it has some sort of throttle on it. And again I hope it works. frank

That Gilbert is a magnifecent piece, too, but I didn't want to ramble on and on!
Kristofer also took me to school on the subject of MU 2 versus PT motors. I did not realize the interchangability with Tyco locomotive shells. I have four on order, now, to replace several defunct PT motors.

Those MU-2s will breathe new life into any 4 axle Tyco. I wish there was a work around for the PT's in the 630's.

rdc1 found a way to make the PowerTorque actually perform as the designers intended. Turns out the PT is one of those products that has a good design impeded by substandard materials - specifically, the magnets. By replacing the stock magnets with Dash Motorsports T-Dash magnets, he got the motor to run without overheating and provide substantially better pulling power. You do have to chisel or grind some of the side walls of the motor cavity to get them to fit since they're just a hair fatter and have slightly different curvature, but it's worth it

Get some hair clips (of the type with long flat blades) too - you'll want those as brush retainers for when you reassemble the motor.

Wooph! That is clever. However, the better function of the magnets would stress out the pinion gear fairly quick, I'd think. After re-assembling a PT motor here and there, the pinions would invariably ream out, even with a four car train.

I forgot all about those pesky pinion gears! Personally I've never seen them wear out but they are pretty flimsy from what I understand. Is there anyway to replace it? I don't know that much about gears and measurements but is there anyone who makes replacement gears?

rdc1 hasn't had that issue from what I've heard. He has had to glue it in place because they're prone to slipping off in general, but other than that..

well my main problem with them teency weency pinion gears is if they haven't been run in a while then tend to pop off the shaft while loco is in motion & when they do pop off it races the motor! I think you gotta rough up the shaft to make them stick
