Rescued from a bed comforter bag in a thrift store, in a bulk HO train purchase lot, this Mantua is going to the shop with me today to see if it will run. Engine itself seems OK, tender needs axles put back and the drawbar repaired.

That's a rescue job, for sure. Did the tanker come in the same lot? I like the patina on this well loved piece.
A custom painted Athearn Blue Box I bagged from Tin Plate Henry a while back. Took her off the shelf and here she leads a billboard procession at the El Paso Model Train Club. Realizing I didn't have any personal attachment to the Soo, I tried in vain to sell it on Ebay and the Forum, and gave up and found a Tyco caboose to match.

Yes, ti was in the same box, it's the tender for the mantua engine. Great set for sure. I worked on it today, needed oil on the motor bearings, once that got lubed, it fired over well and ran smoothly, but it was barely moving the armature before I did that. Now to solder a new wire from the tender to the engine connection, and it should soon be ready for a track test. :)

My two scratch built 4-4-0 camelbacks side by side. I used Rivarossi drives and tenders. Both the drives and tenders wert kitbashed

* Hi Barry and Jeff. No one makes the 4-4-0 camelbacks. When you want one, you need to make it yourself. They are both done differently, and they run very well. * Thanks for the nice words. frank

I believe you've posted some Aristocraft, in posts prior. They really made some interesting pieces. So often the big manufacturers stick with the same type year in and year out, which considering their overhead and market share, makes sense from their perspective. How do well do those Aristocrafts run? I always liked the American types made alternately by AHM and Bachmann, but the tender motor/universal drive shaft arrangement does not lend itself well to longevity. Some years ago I built a small Old West layout and ran the locomotive probably about 16 hours over two days. It was pretty shot after that.

I have 5 of the Aristocraft locos. A 4-2-2, 2-6-0, 2-4-2 and the 4-6-0 and my Xmas loco was a 2-6-0. So far they have all ran pretty well. My Rivarossi 4-4-0 have been doing rather well since I went thru them and did some fine tuning.

All in all as the oldtimer says they run good after a servicing. The New one 4-2-2 runs smooth but with just 1 driver it isn't the best pulling loco I have. It just looks the best. The other old timers 2-6-0, 2-4-2, 2-8-0, 0-8-0, and different 0-4-0 little surburban all pull just fine for their size. Of the 4-6-0's and there are 3, being larger locos they do very well. Cant forget the 0-4-0t and 0-6-0t's and little 0-4-0 CB&Q switcher new one made, all neat locos. There large 4-6-0 camelback, Mikado, and Mountain all run good. When you search for New one locomotives there are a few different names of companies that sold them. Not just Aristo craft but Ho train co, GHC, AHC, Silvine also. Their is the odd 0-4-0t with a saddle tanker that Catford ken has. I have only seen 2 of them. his and one other. I have never seen their orginal box and don't who sold them. From pictures, they seem to have the same drive as the Silvine 0-4-0t model. frank

I would surely like to see some more posts of those Aristocrafts. Particularly that of the 4-2-2 pulling a little string of varnish, or something likewise appropriate.
While I'm on the subject, your line of Marx is rather excellent, as well, and I've often studied those posts.
