My LOTW is a Lima 00 gauge Deltic class Green Howards from the 80's. It actually runs surprisingly well, despite having a low quality pancake motor.

You are correct. This loco had the early British Railway logo, dating the livery back to the early-mid 50s.

Steve, Well maybe it is because the motor isn't so bad as you thought nor the gearing. The designers of these things do a excellent job and the contracted builders usually screw it up. If they cant mess it up enough the part suppliers can destroy a model with carless attention. frank

I suppose so. I looked online and most of these things seem to run fairly well, much like mine does, so maybe the motor is, in fact, a fairly well made motor.

My LOTW is my first brass loco ever, which I just picked up at a train show:
It's a B&O B-18A, and I think it was made by KTM (Ka Tsu Mi hence KTM) and imported by GHC. Like a lot of older brass it has zamak driver centers, but fortunately they don't seem to be deteriorated. The design is quite rugged; the mechanical fits are good, and while the drive is a simple worm and gear, the worm pitch is fine and the loco operates smoothly. It's quite clean, which seems surprising in a loco that must be almost 60 years old. Must not have seen much running.
Can anybody tell me more about this loco, and about GHC brass in general? I suspect this is from the early 60s, perhaps the late 50s even. The seller, who had quite a lot of older brass at reasonable prices, had this tagged at $140. I got it for $118 (negotiated him down to $120 but ended up not having that in-pocket :P ). Does that sound like a good price? I really don't know much about brass, but I like Ten Wheelers and the B18. :)

* What my brass book says about this loco. B&O B-18 ten wheeler. Importer General hobbies Corporation, Builder KTM, Year 1959-1961, Factory painted. That is all. Now another one was released by HO Train Company HOTCO no year list so probably the following 2 or 3 years . Was brass colored. That is all I can find on the KTM models of this locomotive. frank

Thanks TT! You've backed up my guess at its origins, which is very helpful, and the year seems to line up well with this sort of factory paint job. Pretty early in the brass game, then. I haven't been able to find magazine ads for it yet, let alone reviews, but looking at similarly sized locos I guess it would have sold for $30-35 when new in '59. :)
This seems to be right at the ragged edge where Polks/GHC is bleeding rapidly into AHM. The whole Philadelphia model railroad complex seems shadowy and even a little shady, somehow...

Thank You! Bidding was quite a dog fight, and this had a pretty hefty price tag, but heck, how often do you come across it?

Rubber band drive Budd set whisking through the deserts of El Paso. Listed as "not found" in Greenberg's, these were snatched in near mint condition from a back bin in Riudoso, NM.
