I got this Mantua General in a group of "parts" locomotives earlier this moth. I finally got started on restoring it and discovered that it is an earlier version. The power wire from the tender to the locomotive has a cloth insulation on it. The wire, instead of being soldered/clipped to the motor brush, has been crimped to a cutout on the brush. I'm presuming that this places the manufacture date around the late 50's to early 60's. Anyone know for sure?

I have the motor cleaned and lubed and it actually starts to turn at 3/4 of a volt. At full throttle, it only draws about .4 amps and runs very well. I'ma thinking I may have gotten a good deal on this batch of locos.

Sounds good George. That motor does sound like an older one. Another finding would be the flat head screws rather than round head holding the frame pieces together (as yours has).
