These would be good projects for those wanting to enter the custom painting field....

I got this Tyco Plymouth Industrial Switcher for $5. It had two layers of paint on it and didn't work. After replacing some parts so it runs well, I had some Conrail decals left over and thisis the result. I used Testor's Gloss White as a base and Badger B&M blue. Then I coated with my Testor's Gloss/Dullcoat 50/50 mix.

I found this mint Athearn Bay Window caboose at show for $2. I needed an Amtrak MoW Bay Window caboose for all of the Amtrak MoW engines I have. This originally was a Milwaukee Orange Caboose that I re-painted with Testor's Mango (orange) and then I coated it with my Testor's Gloss/Dullcoat 50/50 mix after adding the Amtrak decals.

These look real nice Pete. What is this "50/50" Gloss/Dullcoat? Is this something you mix, or you purchase it that way?

It is my "custom mix".....

Using Testor's- 1/4 of a bottle of Dullcoat mixed with a 1/4 bottle of Glosscoat and then fill up the bottle to the bottom of the neck with Laquer thinner..... Use a empty Testor's Dullcoat or Glosscoat bottle..... I marked the bottle with a Sharpie some the amount/mixture is always the same....

Cool. Thanks for the response Pete. Now maybe if I saw a car with your 50/50 mixture side by side with one with dullcoat only, I could pick out a difference that doesn't pop out in the photo (other than a really nice paint job). I'm curious how you came to develop that mix and what differences you note when using it?

Sometimes the Dullcoat is too dull and handling/scuff marks can be seen. Also repeated handling of dullcoat it gets dirty. This 50/50 is similar to the coating used by Athearn after they paint their diesels. Check out the patched SP/UP models I did. The gloss coat was too shiney.......

So basically, what you've come up with is a satin varnish.

Varnish is a whole different ballgame....
What I came up with is a Semi-Gloss clear finish.

Semi gloss seems like the perfect term to describe that mix.

Here is your pic....

Notice the difference.... The semi-gloss will not show the dirt/oils from your hands like the Dullcoat will. The white stuff around the horns is dust from sitting on the shelves.

Thanks Pete. So . . . maybe the dust will "blow off" easier than "sticking" to dull coat?

The Semi gloss is much better as the surface is smoother.....
