Going to buy a couple tyco rock island f 9 units in red and yellow this weekend from a LHS, and plan on super detailing them and plan on putting them on athearn f unit chassis. Hardest part I think will be removing the dynamic brake fan and then matching the paint. Would normally use a step drill bit to cut it out, how ever most of my tools etc is packed away in storage, and don't feel like digging through it all. Any others ideas on how to remove it other then a lot of sanding. Also what red is a good match to the paint on them? Also how do I link a picture to a post?

Got the locomotives now, parts on order except for a few out of stock at walters. looks as if the pilot on them will take some work to fix.

Slick job of cutting and fitting plastic. Was that toothless grin of a pilot the original design or were the pilots broken when you got them?
Either way, they look much better, now.

They are made that way to allow the truck mounted coupler to swing wide which i cut off, going to use body mounted kadee couplers. Still have to put some putty on them to fill in a couple gaps.

Was going to mount the rear coupler to the frame however there is not enough room on the frame to do that, so had to glue them to the rear truck. You can tell in the picture how little room there is behind the truck, guessing the tyco rear truck is mounted to far back, i don't have another brand f unit here to compare to it to. All mine are packed away in storage.

On a Stewart F7, the truck is about twice as far from the end as in your picture of the Tyco. On an Athearn, it's about three times as far.
By the way, have you checked that coupler height? It looks a bit low.

Thanks for the info. Yup it's a tad low. Not sure where my kadee height guage is at, and most of my tools. Moved a couple months ago and cant find them, and some air brush bottles, the dremal tool parts, have looked in most of the boxs in storage and cant find them. i should have put all that stuff in one box but no i was in a hurry packing and put stuff in differnt boxs. Have bent the trip pin up so it is above the rail top. The frount end looks like it will need a # 27 coupler. I plan on putting a new drive on both of them at some future date.

Here is couple new shots of one of them with some detail parts. Not happy with the way the badger model flex paint is covering or should i say not covering. Is there any other water based paints on the market, i used to use pollyscale paint but cant get it any more.

Badger Modelflex paint is formulated to be used in an airbrush. You can brush it on but usually requires several coats.

I've been using some Model Master paint. It brushes on similar to Polly Scale and seems to smooth out brush marks the same way. You do have to watch a little closer that you don't put air bubbles in the paint.
I like it better than Model Flex, but that's a personal preference.
I've found that most any color other than black has to go over a white or light gray primer coat for the color to look even. Old paint jobs will show through otherwise.

Tried to put on the numbers for the number boards, and the decals fell apart, put on gloss coat twice and they still fall apart, okay will print them on the printer, the printer is out of ink and $ 70 for new ink, can buy a new printer on sale for just $ 10 more on sale, thinking of getting microscale mc- 4131 it has the black numbers i need. All my other decal sheets have white numbers go figure.

If you do many diesel numberboards, this is a good option:

I just got done looking at pictures of real Rock Island engines, and most that I saw had white numbers on a black background.

yes most had white numbers on black however these two and the others in that series had black numbers on white for some reason, maybe cause them came from the union pacific. The rocks gp38 where the same way.

Just about done now, some final paint touch up, waiting on lift rings, number board decals and the side air grilles to come in. And some weathering to it also.

Those are looking very nice. Will you be modifying the skirts to the abridged ones common to F9s?

Thought of doing that but decided not to as the underframe is not right, so it would look wroung. Have done some weathering on the underframe trucks etc. Even pulled the tape off the upper headlight lol.
