Back when I was in preschool, my grandmother on my dad's side bought a model train set for me to give me when I was old enough. I got into it when I found it in the cupboard where it was kept, but was told to put it away since I wasn't old enough for it yet. Years later, when I finally came to claim it, I discovered that in the intervening time my cousins had gotten into and ravaged the set. The cars were destroyed, and several pieces of the track were either destroyed or lost. And of course, the box was annihilated. All that survived was the loco, pictured here, some of the curved track (which had brass rails and copper joiners), and the power pack (Brown, with a tan knob). I recall from seeing it back when it was intact that the set contained a caboose and a hopper, and I believe one of the cars was blue. Not a lot to go on, I know.

Google Bachmann HO Diesel Express Train Set #00091. May or may not be it.

I don't think it's the Diesel Express. Every pic I've seen shows steel rail track, and an F9 rendered in a duller gray without the yellow and black lining on the paintjob, and with gray truck frames.
It seems like the similarly-named Diesel Hustler is a strong possibility, though. Photos show the fully-liveried shiny F9 and I even found a photo showing the brass rail track with copper joiners.

I'd say Diesel Hustler too, based on the level of graphic detail on the shell. Couldn't find a photo of a Diesel Express like that anywhere.

Yes, yes it is. One of the 60' shorties, so no die-cast detailed ends and no doors.
