That's really a sharp looking paint job on those CB&Q cars. The prototypes showed a kind of pride in the brand, and the models put that across nicely, as well.

Yes, the railroads used to show pride with their rolling stock, not so much today.
Even before the graffiti explosion, the carriers had lost interest in having eye catching
equipment, mostly in the name of "cost control".

Burlington Northern was the first offender, for a while during the 1990's they did away
with all unnecessary lettering on their cars. Santa Fe during the same period did away
with their billboard style lettering in favor of tiny emblems and minimal lettering. Most
of the other railroads quickly followed suit.

The graffiti problem also got a foot hold during the 1990's, the carriers cared so
little for their public image that they chose to ignore the problem when they could
have done something about it. Now the vandalism is so out of control that it would be
almost impossible to stop.

This was a fun project, not overly complicated but not
to simple either. I especially like the yellow stripe in
this paint scheme, these cars will really stand out in a
train.

That's a really nice set. And yes the yellow stripe does make them stand out.

Hey everyone,

I'm way overdue in adding more to this thread, for those of you who thought that My Tyco Plug Door
Boxcar Rebuilding Program was finnished I have good news, more cars on on their way!

As before, Trainfest keeps providing inspiration to keep this project going. For the last few years, as you
may remember from my earlier posts, the Wisconsin South Eastern division of the NMRA has been dedicating each of its annual Trainfest train shows to a different historical railroad company. Past railroads so honored include Chicago and North Western, Milwaukee Road, Soo Line, Great Northern, and Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy. As you may note, all of these prior companies operated trackage inside the state of Wisconsin.

For the 2020 Trainfest, the WISE division has decided to go beyond Wisconsin state lines for a new carrier to honor, and you would never guess what company they chose....

MISSOURI PACIFIC!!!

Scuttle butt has it that MP is being honored elsewhere in the NMRA organization and the WISE guys decided to save a little on display costs by piggy backing expenses with other events.

Now don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with celebrating the Missouri Pacific, BUT if it were up to me, I would have chosen a carrier that is at least tangentially connected with Wisconsin. Union Pacific, Canadian National, and Canadian Pacific may not be traditionally considered Wisconsin rail carriers, but all three of these companies operate trackage in Wisconsin today. Also, what about Burlington Northern? BN would have been a great Fallen Flag to commemorate, especially after just honoring the GN and CB&Q.

Oh well, the decision has been made and guess what, I have never modeled Missouri Pacific rolling stock with rebuilt Tyco pluggers. Looks like it is time to get to work....

I have already started work on two three-car sets of MP boxcars.

The first set is based on PS-1 Hydra-frame equipped MP insulated boxcars...

As you can see these cars are ready for painting

The second set features more traditional sliding door boxcars...

These cars will need some more work before heading to the paint booth.

Oh, and while we are celebrating the MP, we may as well make some engines and
a caboose to match my new equipment. I haven't started my locos yet, but here is a
sneak peak at my MP caboose....

I especially like the off-set cupola, a feature that sets MP Wide Vision cabooses
apart from those owned by all other railroads.

Stay tuned...

I'm happy you approve! These last few weeks since I painted these cars have been so hectic I haven't had a chance to decal them yet. The good news is that I have vacation coming up so I should soon have some time to get back to work on these cars.

I only hope that we still have a Trainfest show this November, if this COVID19 virus is still floating around this fall there is a good chance it will be cancelled.

Don't worry though, regardless of the status of Trainfest, I will still finish my Mo-Pac train!

Looks like you have a good start on your locomotive project, which railroad is it going to be decorated for?

How did I make my locos so fast? Two words...Social Isolation. Avoiding COVID 19 is good for getting things done at home.

Air brushing can be a tricky skill to master, I still occasionally botch a paint job after all these years. I recommend
practicing your skills on some simple projects first and then work your way up to more complex paint schemes.

Incidentally, boxcar brown is a really easy color to work with, how about practicing on a some Tyco plugger
rebuilds of your own?

It's going to be decorated for my railroad, the Blaxland Ridge. I actually somehow don't have a single plugger lying around, but I do have an observation car I was going to practice on. But I am certainly inspired by those new pluggers of yours. Maybe someday...

I must say Srenchin, you should really start an eBay buisness. Have people send in their old tyco pluggers, either have them select a scheme, or ask them what scheme they want based on the colors and decals you have. You could make a TON of money!! I'd buy one!

Had I not seen this thread from the start, I would have assumed
that all this was high end brass start to finish. I would never
guess any of this was an ubiquitous Tyco plug door, nor
Athearn. Nice vid, nice layout. Liked the crossing and
bridge scene.

I must say Srenchin, you should really start an eBay buisness. Have people send in their old tyco pluggers, either have them select a scheme, or ask them what scheme they want based on the colors and decals you have. You could make a TON of money!! I'd buy one!

Thanks for the compliment, interesting idea about selling these cars on eBay. Trouble is the best way to ruin a hobby is to turn it into a business. Some day I may start selling off my pluggers to make room for new projects but I don't see that happening for a long time.

Had I not seen this thread from the start, I would have assumed
that all this was high end brass start to finish. I would never
guess any of this was an ubiquitous Tyco plug door, nor
Athearn. Nice vid, nice layout. Liked the crossing and
bridge scene.

Thank you for the compliment Chops, my main goal with this project was to see if I could turn Tyco equipment into
passable models that could blend in with the newer "high end" cars being produced today. I think I might have pulled it off!!!

I believe you are correct: met or exceeded that level.

I totally agree!

Srenchin, any chance you could make a Blaxland Ridge plugger? The Ridge uses Maroon red for their freight cars that haul non - perishable items. The ladders/grab irons are white, and there are no elaborate color schemes or decal work, just "Blaxland Ridge" or "Blaxland" or "BLRX" In white, along with the car number and car info stuff. You can choose the car number if you choose to make it.

That would be so cool!

I found a new video by atjoe1972 on Youtube that deserves to be included in this thread. No stranger to rebuilding Tyco pluggers, this modeler demonstrates how easy it is to repaint and decal a Tyco plugger into a realistic looking piece of rolling stock.

Great work atjoe1972!

That looks amazing, but I seem to recall that Srenchin
went a lot further with grab irons and such?

That's true, I did do more modifications than just a paint and decal job on most of my cars. However, the whole point of my Plug Door Boxcar Rebuilding Program was to demonstrate the potential these cars have for improvement and how easy it is to do. This video displays that admirably.

On the other end of the Tyco Plug Door Boxcar video spectrum I found this cheeky guy's parody production. I think he was going for a spoof of a SAM'S TRAINS review but goes over the top for his complete contempt for this Tyco product. Intentionally running the car off the edge of his layout especially hurt my feelings, that plugger could have been turned into something to be proud of.

I found yet another video from atjoe1972 that deserves to be included in this thread. This tutorial demonstrates how he modified a Bachmann 50 foot plugger by swapping out the molded on plug doors with Accurail sliding doors.

Several years ago incidentally I was asked this question....

You know, if you're not making the sliding doors operate, why do you go to the trouble of cutting the plug doors out instead of just shaving and sanding the original door detail away? Just wondering.

Joe (off screen) demonstrated the hard way why I avoid chiselling off unwanted molded on detail....

This came thorough yesterday and I immediately thought of you. Old 50 foot plugger has three different types of doors. Looks like a modelling challenge to me.
