My LOTW is a Rivarossi H0 Dreyfuss Hudson. It's quite a lovely model, but it's extremely light. It runs alright, but it most likely needs more weight in the locomotive to help make it run better, I guess. But otherwise, it looks gorgeous, and it even came with modern knuckle couplers (they were added on).

I checked. The weight is there, from what I can tell.

Check if there's room to add more weight. I have the non-streamlined one and added weight to it for fairly decent traction. Later I saw one at a model RR open house spinning out like it was on ice and figured that the added weight really helps.

Thank you. Its definitely a good looking engine. It's surprisingly sensitive to switches, actually.

It derails a lot? Is that a weight issue? I would enjoy seeing some pictures of it on a layout, if you get a chance.

I am posting a photo of a EMD F7 A<B<A lash up. It is a very old set and was originally what Athearn called Hi-Fi drive. The trailing A unit still has its original drive without traction belts so it free wheels. The lead A unit, and the B unit, which was unpowered, have both been repowered using a second generation gear drive. You can tell the A units are very old by the black plastic, glue on number boards. Their is plenty of power here to pull a long Santa passenger train under a magical Christmas Tree. Merry Christmas Everyone, And like Tinny Tim said" God Bless Us, EVERY ONE ".

Is this sensitivity to switches the pilot truck jumping the tracks on switches? On mine there was a spring that pulled the truck downward and toward the center of the engine. The pull toward the center made it want to pick points and frogs when on the curved path.
I eventually rigged up a kind of spring that just pushed the truck down more solidly to the tracks while letting it follow the curves freely from side to side.

My LOTW is a locomotive doing the honors of pulling the Christmas train this year. It's a 2-4-0 Bowker (motor in the tender version).

Yes, it is a beautiful engine. If the problem is derailing, check the wheel gauge in addition to checking the spring. Fixing that usually solves issues at turnouts. If it is losing power, give all the wheel pickups a good cleaning. And you might add a bit of weight in the tender to improve pickup there as well.

Okay, I opened up the tender, and there was some nasty crusty stuff all over the connection. I cleaned that up, and the engine ran a little better. After watching it run for a little bit, I noticed that when it had problems, it was mostly the front wheel on the front truck that was sparking. I looked at it and there was some sort of crust on it. After cleaning that up, the engine runs like a charm.
