My LOTW is a Rivarossi 0-4-0 shifter from the late 60's.

I have a very special LOTW this week. Its my Old Number 7 on the Covered Bridge Central. Some unusually mild weather has created a substantial increase in traffic on the CBC Line. This warranted pulling an older engine out of the mothballs that had been sidelined due to reliability issues. Old Number 7 was selected and has been treated to a partial overhaul!
Number 7 is the oldest ten wheeler on the line and has been on the roster since the very beginning. Operationally the Bachman 4-6-0 suffered from battery power and a poor running motor. Interference caused by running on the brass rails outdoors caused interruptions in signals from the factory remote control and it was a noisy, choppy runner.
Number 7 was treated to a new surplus PC motor that is much quieter than the original. The original pilot wheels were replaced with nickel silver sets from NWSL and sliders and pickups were added to the pilot truck to convert over to track power. A new bigger brighter headlight bulb was installed for nighttime running and also a Seuthe smoke unit was installed in the stack. The original configuration lacked a smoke unit. Now the engine belts out smoke with the best of them!
During the rebuild the Bachman sound board was removed but the speaker was retained. The original sound was pretty poor and synthetic sounding. the remedy comes in the form of a twenty dollar Vivatar bluetooth speaker that can be plugged in to a jack that runs to the tender. The speaker can be placed under the coal load or placed in another car such as a gondola or a coach I simply link with bluetooth to my smartphone and then google free train sounds to my phone and send them to the speaker. I can sit on the patio and trigger all sorts of sounds and many are digital and are high quality. Try it friends! Seriously, twenty bucks and the speaker can be moved from one engine to another. No 150 dollar sound cards here. Garden railroading on a budget. Try it on an HO layout. Also in the works for #7 are new nickel silver crossheads , slides and side-rods.

If this is cheating, then I will supplant the explanation my entry is for the lack my my efforts in previous weeks (months, years)...

And... you don't want to deal with my "Baggage" car(s)...

please PM me if you wish to know the contents of the "baggage" car.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

My locomotive of the week is this Mantua Pacific with "Power Drive":

"Power Drive" is a bigger motor connected via a flexible shaft to a gear box over the center axle. It's pretty nice on the larger engines like the Pacific and Mikado.

This engine is fundamentally good, but has a terrible paint job that's flaking off and whoever built it did not remove any flash nor mold parting lines from the castings. I'll be stripping off all the bad paint, removing the flash and repainting. I'll also make some modifications while it's apart. You can see that I've already stripped and deburred the trailing truck and tender trucks.

Carpe Manana!

I had a Rivarossi 0-4-0 shifter many moons ago (in the late 70's). As I recall it was a very nice looking model but it ran REALLY fast when put it at full throttle. I remember it flying off my 15"r curves one time. Pretty cool!

Maybe we should start a new topic and call it Locomotive Collection of the Week. Nice collection there
