I was surprised a few days ago when my son showed me what he wanted for his up coming 16th birthday this month. He showed me a Bachmann train set in HO. It was a 4 piece with the F7 , two cars and a caboose. About 7 years ago, a friend of mine who owns storage units, gave me a complete 5 or 6 car Model Power train set in boxes, that was left in an unpaid storage area. I'm going to build him a 4X6 or similar size table and set him up with a small running set. Hope he likes it!!!

Bought the lumber about 5 o'clock today and built my son's train table. I done a 4X4 and I will see if he really has interest before going larger. I used the reasonably priced OSB board since no great detail is expected here. I hope to paint it tomorrow.

That's a great first train set/layout! Just getting the train up off the floor is a big improvement to the simple oval. Do you happen to have any EZ Track turnouts? Even a single spur would go a long way towards holding your son's interest. There appears to be a mixture of rolling stock brands there, and are those 8-wheel-drive Model Power F3's I see?

Thank You, Glenn. This was all of the EZ track I have period. I think the turnout is a great idea too. I'm anxious to see if he asks me to get buildings , etc. to add to it.
The set was originally all Model Power. It had a stock box car that had been dropped and has wheel issues and a broken connector. So I added the two Tyco pieces nearest to the caboose. Ya know, I don't know about the 8 wheel drives... I'll have to look. The one engine is a dummy. I've not been around MP products at all.

So he doesn't get to play with Dad's layout?

Not often, Ray. I let him run the slot cars when the trains are still. My girl, 11 loves to finger everything she can reach. I have actually declared the table a, "Do Not Touch" zone.
Don't want to be mean, but I really love my hobby pieces and don't want them broken. They don't understand that these piece are all fairly old, and I'm one that hates "broken Sturrups". Don't want to keep buying replacements...
So it's a no on playing with my layout...

UPDATE: My boy has not even mentioned his train table in months. It's on the other side of the basement by his bed, but he hasn't touched it. Driving and modern day electronics has stolen his attention from the hobby. I can't say that I'm surprised.

Walt, he might take interest again later, don't give up hope. I'm about his age, and I'm in and out. School and other projects come up. I haven't touched my layout much for the last couple months, although now that summer has started I have a bit more time. You could try asking if he still has any interest.

Yeah, the table and trains are sitting there. Not costing anyone anything. I don't want to mention the trains because he will get a renewed 5 day interest that I don't want to deal with. Hopefully he will take interest again at a later time.
