I picked this one up for a mere $20 on Friday. I thought I might try some kind of super-powered RDC with the chassis. When I took the shell off...Surprise! Another decoder bonus. This one seems to have more function than the LL E7 I got earlier this year. I'll have to take it to a friend who has DCC smarts, and see what it does. Athearn BB AC4400. Evan

That CM Spectrum is pretty fine Ken and the "atmosphere" in that photo only adds to it's realism. I'm curious, that wasn't a factory paint? Tell me about it. Thanks, Barry

Cool loco and a steal. The decoder alone is worth 20 bucks.

In reading up on early steam, while building up this kit, I learned that one of the most vexing problems in steam boiler design was getting enough heat to the water to get enough steam up. In a variable speed locomotive (as opposed to a stationary boiler working at a constant RPM), the more power that is applied to move the load, the faster the working steam pressure drops, and it does so very quickly; stalling out the locomotive.
Trevithick overcame this, to a degree, by ventilating the fire and exhausting the hot smoke through a single flue that doubled back on itself, inside the boiler, which is why the stack is where the driver stands. The other thing he did was contain the single cylinder inside the boiler to help keep it hot.
It took about another fifteen years before better flue and ventilation technology emerged, first showing up in George Stephenson's "Lancastire Witch," and fined tuned a year later in the "Rocket."
"Modern" steam locomotives all have multiple flues, as many as possible, squeezed into the boiler, ever since the advent of the Witch and the Rocket in the late 1820's, so provide this super heating capacity, and use the same principle of drafting steam exhaust up the stack so as to increase the ventilation to the fire, likewise.
A 5 MPH top speed, and a range of about 9 miles, kept this machine limited to colliery (mine) use. There are no cross ties, the cast iron guideways were mounted on granite blocks, to better allow draft horses to pull the same carts.
It appears that Trevithick, a manufacturer of boilers for stationary use, was looking for more markets for his product, as much as anything. In building this kit, it appears he grafted on wheels and a transmission to a stock product.
