I bought this less than an hour ago! It took a bit of cleaning, but I had it running in less than 10 minutes. runs sweet. Any guesses as to the maker/importer? Don't know if you can see in the picture, the motor is covered in metal filings. Evan

It's a Ken Kidder. Looks a little banged up but if you paid $10 you did awesome! They sell for $50-$75 in good shape.

That sounds about right. It was distributed by ATT in the 60's and 70's, I believe, at least in some form. http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/atttrainsresource/id123.html

That has nothing to do with ATT! Totally different machine. The Ken Kidder is the builder and importer. ATT sold there's after the fact. It's not even the same mechanism or motor and it's drivers and rods are as well.

Yup, a little Ken Kidder loco. Ten bucks is a helluva deal for that though. Planning on doing anything with the funny balloon stack?

I haven't given the stack much thought, yet. The entire body is currently soaking in my paint stripper soup. Sorry, personal recipe. I'll have to wait and see just how much solder is holding it on/in. Judging by some of the repairs, there could be gobs of the stuff. We'll see. Evan

That smoke stack looks like the original stack according to the catalog. It looks like the front of the boiler was changed at some point.

I've since stripped the paint from the little bugger. Evidently, it took a dive to the floor at some time. The stack took the main impact, then the cab roof hit. So what appears to be a modification is the stack base having been punched into the boiler. I'll try to fix it. Shiny pictures to follow.

A little bit cleaner than before. I also came across a pic of same in an MR from 1966. Ben, your first comment was right on the money. The stack does appear to have an addition below it. Also, the smokebox front is missing. Evan

What cleaner did you use for the brass? It made it shine differently that the stuff I use. Looking real, real good. Original assembler used a LOT of solder on it.

OT52, I use stuff called Autosol. It comes in a bottle now, but used to come in a tube like toothpaste. At first I thought it wasn't as good in liquid form, but after using it awhile, it seems about the same. I think all the excess solder is from the stack mod. or repair. I will attempt to remove the stack and fix the dent in the boiler. Evan

What a transformation! And what a little jewel that is. Pretty cool. There's another one I'd leave without paint!

I found a pic. in a '67 MR showing this loco with the straight stack. Stupid pic. wouldn't load. Anyway, both my stacks have been cut so they could be joined. I'll try to fix the balloon stack with a length of brass rod. Evan
