| The drive appears to be Varney..except....the name isn't on the bottom plate. Looks like an Asian knock-off drive.

It kinda reminds me of a Tenshodo model, actually. Not sure, though.

George, You have a vintage Japanese Tenshodo EMC FT Diesel. The odd shaped nose is the give away. I believe this is from the 60's. It may be a Varney drive or at least a copy. love the bulb sticking out of the nose headlight.

Great. Thanks guys. Got this little gem for $32, postage included. Am gonna see about restoring it and keeping it brass. Will polish it up and coat it. The price was right so I just grabbed it up. Those instructions for the F9 will help when I go to dis-assemble it for cleaning.

I barely got that last post out. Phone rang, been two hours on the phone. I saw that too and thought "Tenshodo" and no other manufacturer that springs readily to mind messed up the nose as badly as they did.

That's a great find and buy. I could sit and look at thing for hours. Second the idea of polishing and coating it, just about too beautiful to paint.

For $32, you did pretty good, man. I just love how weird it looks.

| Looks like a 50s-era FT. Most likely Tenshodo.

I was watching that auction too, and wondered if it was Tenshodo. Interesting that the chassis weight is a somewhat crude casting of the prime mover.

After a little more research, the drive train is a Varney knock-off, right down to the side frames and the mounts for them. Received it yesterday and the front truck side frame was broken. Found a set of Varney F3 side frames, and they are EXACT duplicates of the ones that are on the model. I can use Varney parts to restore the drive train and get it up to full operational status. Thanks to everyone for their input.

No problem, man. Funny how they completely ripped off Varney in terms of the overall motor and trucks. I find it hilarious.

Actually, it shows that they knew a good thing and then copied it. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they used to say.

Yeah, I guess I can't argue. Whatever the case, they did a pretty good job on it.

Maybe, They bought the drive components from Varney. A lot of other brands of models used Athearn parts in later years.
