According to the latest reports he was going about 106 MPH into a 50 MPH curve! They say he applied the brakes with seconds to spare, and slowed it to 102 MPH. It's not surprising that first coach looks like a crumpled tube of aluminum foil. I'm amazed the death toll wasn't higher.

My thought go out to the victims and their families.

It's all anyone's talking about here outside Philadelphia. 7 people and one Amfleet car were killed, and a brand new ACS64 is out of commission. Not only is this on the site of the 1943 wreck of the Congressional Limited, but an overheated journal box that led to a broken axle was the cause of that wreck, and has been implicated in this one as well (as an effect of the excess speed of course). Many prayers go out to the victims and all involved, as well as the many passengers who are now stranded as SEPTA, NE Regional and Acela services are mostly suspended.

The coroner stated all of the victims died from blunt force trama to the chest.
It is amazing how that one car was shredded.

The next time I ride Amtrak, I will sit in one of he back cars.....

Railroad accidents sure do seem prevalent these days. The radius of that Amtrak curve seemed pretty tight; as did the curve on that previous commuter train wreck (Amtrak?).

As they always say, history always repeats itself.... Horrible what happened, though.

John, I had the opportunity to speak with a man who had been a large, jet aircraft mechanic, for 40 years. I remember one thing he told me out of his many stories;

"If it isn't Boeing, I am not going."

That same government is living proof that more money will not eliminate stupid mistakes.
