Picked up a car I thought was an odd Gilbert.

What we have is a car that appears to use a Revell die, has lettering similar to the Varney version Gilbert B&O hopper, but it's grey with red lettering and a four digit number. Underneath, the trucks are like early Tyco, but no coupler tab, couplers are body mounted and use a very Gilbert like coupler cover and rivet. It also has a cast or stamped metal underframe as a separate part, and a plastic cast coal load.

The only marking on it is "Made in Japan" under the slope sheet on one end.

I was able to find one on eBay, but no brand name either.

Sakai perhaps?

Two bay or four?
HObbyline had a 4-bay with a plate and rivet for coupler. But no B&O.

Revell never made a 4-bay that I am aware of. Gilbert either, for that matter.

If the number on your B&O Hopper is 5963, it is Sakai.

Note that the graphics on the B&O Box Car, New Haven Box Car and the CNW Reefer are copies of A.C. Gilbert HO cars right down to the numbers on the cars.

Nice detective work, and I've seen very, very
few of this product. I like it.
