My car this week is this gondola with a home made junk load. There are no markings for the maker of this car so I have also posted a bottom shot. Maybe someone can let me know the maker. Thanks

The bottom.

Definitely looks like a cheaper manufacturer from the 70's or 80's. Anyway, my COTW is a Great Northern Sky Blue livery log car I got with a ton of stuff from my grandparents.

The other truck is actually very loose. As you can see in this photo, the other truck fell off. I found it floating around in the bin when taking stuff out and put it back on. Keep coming off.

I'm not going to say they were all kits..but most were. I have a pile of assembled units. Check the frame/floor carefully. Some exploded. The Bowser replacements are drilled for KD's, won't work with MDC or DeVore. Carefully bend the edges to get a tight fit. I had to go inside and hot glue the seams to keep some tight. Dave

Thanks Walt. Every time I found a small piece, I picked it up and put it in a jar. I threw away an old power amp but before it went, I took it apart and kept the small pieces. Than I spray them a rust color than added color to that. There is even 2 spent 22 cal. shells in that load.

My contribution this week is a mystery car. Trucks look like Marx, or maybe Model Power redo? At any rate, it's some sort of action car, but I have no idea what it does, other than kick something out. Any ID helpful!

I was gonna post this to "identification station" but it seems to be appropriate here with the hay bale car. What is this one? It's clearly marked Bachmann. Something must interface with the lever to eject something. That is to say it's not one of those cars that has contacts on the side to operated electrically.

I looked at Tony Cook's site where there is a Stock Car and Corral listed as an "action accessory, but that doesn't do anything. It's not an "operating" accessory. It's just for looks.

I tried sticking one of those horses in, but that doesn't fit.
Maybe this was just to deliver bales of hay too?

Scalecraft I checked the box (through the cellophane) and didn't see any stray bits of zamac floating around inside. I can also see both ends of the floor, and they're the same length as the sides.. Without tearing the packaging off, that's the best I can do. Am I being too sentimental with it? What would you guys do? Help me ! I can't decide. Evan

I found the same number car in an identical box a couple months ago, already assembled. (Varney made at least 2 numbers of the earlier NYNH&H brown scheme, so I don't know if there are other numbers for the McGinnis orange one.) It was from the later run of the Varney metal boxcar when they switched from casting the floor piece in zamac to molding it in plastic. Mine has no box cellophane, but I left the original trucks in their little holders, installed a pair of kadees, a pair of MDC trucks, and a set of SS wheelsets on it and called it good.
My 2cents, as special as it is to have one still FACTORY SEALED, and as notoriously unpleasant it is to get those metal sides and roof to all hold together squarely, I'd still rip it open (very carefully!) and have a go at building it. It's definitely not often that you get the chance to build a Varney car right from the original kit, I've only gotten to do one tanker. Plus, if its floor is zamac, and things do go terribly wrong, I think I have an extra plastic floor for this car with kadees in it that I'd be happy to donate to your car.

You won't know until you pull it out and look with a magnifying loupe. There were two cast metal frames. I have both types. One with a big raised area...very heavy...then one with thin frame, not so heavy. I have 13 of them, box and reefer. One was assembled shell, no frame (near as I can tell PO removed frame from new kit to fix an old one, as this was un-weathered and all the rest were), and three frames or 4 were exploded. They are all repaired now. Once you figure bends, place face of sides down on workbench (paper towel to protect finish), lay a carpenter's square on the bend line, and bend up around that. Get the sides tucked into the ends. Remember NOT to bend the tabs on the bottom until you have the floor in...after you get the grabs and such in. I prefer to work the screws in first, floor separate, spot of oil, that way you don't have a whole lot of pressure on the body trying to get the screws to seat. Hot glue on the inside is your friend here. These were all in need of sorting. Dave

Varney started making the floor for the metal box car out of plastic in the mid 50's. The NH Box Car box is from the early 60's. My guess is your box car has a plastic floor.
The NH Box Car came in two #s 30862 & 30863

Thanks for the clarification. PGE, seconded that your car floor is the plastic one.
I believe I only have one with a metal floor, which only very mildly exploded, despite surviving a flood of the Delaware river at some point, which corroded the inside of the attached carbody completely (yes, I'm halfway done turning it back into a working car, because I have no common sense at all...) All the rest here (6 or 7) are either the plastic floor or the earliest version with a wooden floor and a cast center frame piece.
Just put 2 and 2 together and realized that I have the sides, ends, roof, and floor for another one of these cars all in my parts supply. FML...

I believe it was Toptrain who offered some practical advice on this question:
If you are a collector, leave the packaging intact; if you are a builder/operator, open that puppy up and use it the way ol' Gordo intended!
My own thoughts on the matter:
If you are concerned about preserving its "value," ask yourself this: Do I intend to keep it until I die? If so, then it has no "value," do with it as you will.
That's just my 2 cents. Perhaps others will weigh in...

Okey dokey, a little off the mainline here, and I need some ID help. The European 4 wheel goods wagon looks like the first image, then it opens up to reveal an empty interior, excepting that my dear sister May, honorary Tycohead, added a rather bizarre interior scene: People getting their laundry done on one side, with people waiting for their clothes on the other. The third image is the bottom of the goods wagon and it is marked "Tyco" and "made in Hong Kong." What in the world of Tyco was this thing??? All four sides elaborately unfold.
