I have these two flat cars, the first I think is an Athearn. What are the slots for.

This one has no markings and I don't know what fits on the end to hold the coupler in. I could cut those off and put a kadee coupler box on.

| The first one looks like it might be the base of a work caboose of some sort. I've seen some flats that have the slots across the decking that hold a small caboose body at that end. Not sure about the 2nd one.

The second one is a Varney. I think, Life Like eventually got the tooling, but by then, I don't think the center sill was still metal.

1st one looks like an Athearn. I'm not sure what the holes in the deck at the right end are for, but the left is definitely for a caboose body. Without the body on the deck.
 With the caboose body attached.

Usually the tool chests are on the outer sides opposite the small shell. Or, it's a small crane. I've seen both.

That's a crane boom tender; the other two slots are for a piece that would support the boom from the 200 ton crane when the two are used as a pair.
Other car is Varney from the mid-50s to mid-60s. Frame piece was optional and didn't come with all of them.

After I read your reply, I remembered that somewhere I had a caboose body that I wasn't sure what it went on. I dug around for about an hour and found it. It fit on that flat car just perfect. Now if someone has a picture of what goes in the other slots I will began my search. Thanks

Frank, you can always look at hoseeker.net under Athearn work caboose and probably see the diagram for the car.

| Looks like I have some searching to do as well. Side pieces, crane support, ladder and stack are missing on mine. And now that I think about it, I don't have the crane either.

I don't think I've seen the Varney flat with a metal frame like that. Must not be very common.
Also, IIRC the PRR work caboose was brown/oxide red, the derrick car was the correct light grey for a PRR MOW car. No need to check the arrangement of slots if you remember that.

While it looks like a metal frame, it isn't. I put a magnet to and nothing happens.

Zinc is not magnetic but it is heavy. Does the car weigh more than a handful of popcorn?
I have two of these cars. One has a zinc alloy center sill and the other has a plastic one that appears to have come out of the same mold as the zinc one. The one with the plastic center sill is VERY light.
