I used to jump the creek and run through the woods to catch a glimpse of these units running on the L&N by my grandparents house in Belleville IL when I was a kid.

kool Were you saddened or surprised when L&N merged with SCL to become The Family Lines?

That's a sweet job of superdetailing! It's detail added later, but it's so neatly done that it looks like it's all designed in from the beginning. Carpe Manana!

Looks more like an Athearn Genesis to me. Very nice. -Steve

Thanks for the kind words guys. I do use pre made grab irons now; I used to bend them all. The cheapest I have found are from Tichy. For the wipers and air hoses I use the scraps from the Miniatronics light bulbs I use. I drill the pilots and super glue in the wire scraps then trim them off even with the footboard. I take the "too short for air hoses" scraps and strip the insulation off and bend them for the wipers.
Detailing on the cheap. I have been also making my lift rings out of scrap wire strands. I need to begin making coupler lift bars too.Randy

Question. Do you still bend your own corner grabirons, or do you buy those from somewhere as well? I go through Tichy straight and drop grab irons like there's no tomorrow, but those are the only two kinds they have at any LHS around here and I need corner grabs for a dozen or so boxcar rebuilds. Haven't really gone looking online to see if Tichy or others make them but this thread reminded me. Besides that though, sick detailing project! That could give a brand-new Genesis unit a run for its money!--CRC

I was a bit young to be nostalgic so I would say that it made it interesting to see yet another road name come to town.

To answer the question about Tichy parts; I only bend grab irons that are too far off from what is commercially available. Like everyone else I use either brass or piano wire.
#3028 these are for cupola roof corners and I use them on the hoods of GE diesels
#3053 24" straight grab
#3057 24" drop grab
#3054 "caboose corner" these are curved for caboose sides and I use them at the rear roof area of EMD diesels.
#3075 "Bracket grabs" (these are plastic and are handy on some boxcars and flat cars.
The following is phosphor/bronze wire. It comes in 36" lengths and is packed 12 pieces to the tube. The longer lengths helps save on waste at the end of a shorter piece.
#1113 .015"
#1114 .020"
#1115 .025"

I am glad if you found something that will help out. I am the king of modeling on a zero budget.
I am hoping you guys noticed the Tichy catalog that you can download to your computer then check it out as needed.
I have gone through;
www.yankeedabbler.com frequently for supplies. They will special order and work with you even if you do not have a $1000 order. Great customer service.Randy
