So, went to a train show today. Only one I ever go to anymore. Found some parts...then came across this booth with a bunch of stuff marked "as-is".
There is a die cast 0-4-0 with slopeback tender...and I knew what it was, Zamac rods and all.
So, for five bucks, I got a complete Yardbird, bad paint, needs tender truck repair (all wheels, one sideframe and springs), got it running good, lubed up, boiler is in the tank right now encouraging the remnants of the poor paint to dissipate.
I also happen to have a spare Yardbird complete tender with trucks, so I might just swap it in.
No photos yet...wait for the paint to go away.

Yeah. Well.
Chassis is done, painted, assembled. Tested.
Boiler is clean, extraneous holes filled, couple waiting for filing when fully dry. Tender shell is clean, extraneous holes filled, smoothed, tender trucks repaired (go figure...Revell sideframe exact match....must have had wrong sideframes on as it was needle point style). gotta drill two holes and add handrail, then paint.
Close.

Turned out nice. What did you do to repair the tender trucks?

Wow! That Yardbird is gorgeous. You did a great job on restoring it. Now all it needs is the CV Valve gear kit.
Regards, Vic B.

When I got it, no wheels on tender at all, one sideframe and springs for that sideframe were missing.
I dug around, in one of the bins in a parts drawer was a Revell truck and spare (single) sideframe....all the same sideframes....and exactly the same as what was on this tender. If I recall...Revell used straight axle stubs, but the ones on the tender and in the bin were for pointed axle stubs. The spare is the same right down to the same corrosion. Had 4 matching metal wheelsets, insulated, pointed axles, so that part was easy!

As in, where does it go, or this:
"Still have a drawbar and backup light housing coming"
Ordered. Experience tells me it may be a while, so I drilled out the hole for a pilot, size it when the housing gets here.
Runs good once I futzed with the mesh. I remember from my last Yardbird rebuild, the worm gears can be oblong or out-of-round.
