You know what, I'll add something to this week's LOTW. Why not? This week is a repeat so that I can keep this week's theme. A Mantua 1950's 4-6-2 that I got at a train show last year.

Dave, I am right in the middle of building one of those Climaxes. How is yours going together and how does it run?

It was kind of noisy with just oil as lube, so I re-lubed the gears and u-joints with Superlube and it quieted down quite a bit. It runs real nice, even with the provided zinc flywheel, which I thought would vibrate a lot. I'm hoping that it's a good climber with the low gearing.

So true. Pretty much any girl at my age, if I mention that I like model trains, that would scare all of them off.

You must be lucky, Alex, because as I said, most girls would run away screaming if they heard/saw you were into trains. And you know what, I don't care.

My LOTW is part of a Christmas set my daughter picked up at a giant yard sale in Portland OR. Honestly I wasn't expecting too much out of it, but I put it on the track to try it out tonight and it runs like a champ. It does tend to "crab" a bit with a little play in the axles, and I had to replace the wheels in the tender to get it to run through turnouts. The tender needs more weight too, as does the carriages and the bobber caboose. Thinking I might detail it a little, see if I can make it a little more presentable.

Going tiny today, an N gauge Life-Like 0-6-0 I got in a train lot that had 3 Santa Fe F7's I wanted for my N gauge SF passenger consist. Two of those 3 run, too! This one just needed some polisihing on the axle flanges where the power pick-up is, and it runs pretty good.

It can't be that hard, because even I've found one... my girlfriend might not be a railfan by any stretch of the imagination, but she puts up with all my trains and crazy stuff. The trick is, she likes old historical stuff as much as I do.

I'm a collector of hobbies so the trains kind of fly under the radar. "Why are you buying another car!? You already have a car! And how much did you spend on that bike four months ago!?" Meanwhile the cheap little toy trains move in to the apartment unnoticed.
In all seriousness though my GF is pretty supportive.
Anyway, to keep things on topic here is a Tyco CN trio.

I dream of steam. Harald Halseth's UP Challenger threads the points at the Bob Orr Yard at the El Paso Model Train Club, today. It is a remote control unit, runs off track power with a hand held transmitter. Full sound. Note the rail heads have a fine patina of wear on them. They have been in use since 1987.

I researched it and found it came from some Christmas train set or something. Very odd.

Yes, I'll post the entire set eventually. Came with two coaches and a bobber caboose. The coaches are - strangely - European style coaches, definitely not American. They all have patches of snow on the roofs. I wouldn't be so interested in this thing if it didn't run so well. It has a high top speed as you would expect from a "train set" type loco, but it also has the ability to literally crawl smoothly around the layout - as well as any loco I have. If it didn't "crab" while doing so, I'd put it up against Darth's recent dockside repower. And that's saying something. The wheelsets on all the cars are horrible though, plastic pizza-cutters that don't roll very well. I replaced the tender wheels with metal Intermountains since it had actual trucks - the coaches and caboose are all 4 wheel/2 axle setups.

The reason it runs well is because of the simple Mabuchi type can motor. I always thought these locos were either Lima or Lima knockoffs. The Playart Wikipedia page settled that question:
Trains and Planes
Uniqueness in offerings and choice of individual vehicles was always interesting. A line of miniature tanks was produced. Playart trains were mostly HO scale. Models varied from coal-fired steam engines from the late 1800s to modern engines from the 1950s and 1960s, including electric coaches. A variety of passenger coaches from varied eras were also featured. This included replicas of the Japanese hi-speed Shinkansen. Many were copies of Lima brand trains from Italy. These trains were also sold under the brand names of Model Power and Tomy (Japan).
The Playart stuff was all over Two Guys and Toys R Us in the early 80's. I think a small selection of their stuff and Bachmann were the only model trains Toys R Us carried back then. My friends & I were more into other things like RC cars at the time, and I remember seeing these and thinking how far the MR hobby had sunk. Looking back I guess I should have picked up a few of the bullet trains. Both stores had so many of those things I was sick of seeing them, and as I recall they were dirt cheap.

Very interesting Nelson. I always wondered about those Model Power Amtrak trains, thinking I'd seen those somewhere before (but not in America)! Japanese Shinkansen. And yes I am easily impressed. I've had Bachmann 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 locomotives that would be problematic going through turnouts, much less run so smoothly at low speeds.
