After a couple false starts, followed by a loss of interest, I have finaly started on overhauling my small layout. I changed around the sidings on the right side, may still change the one off the back side so I can work it easier running counter clock wise. Unsure if the saw mill will stay or not. Probably will stay as I still have a 2 truck shay. Right now, I just make my cut, then run around the loop to shove the car up to the mill. I have more scenery stuff on hand, just havent had time to work on it. When I am not in the steam era, I have my near mint Mantua/Tyco Santa Fe GP20 as motive power. | Pretty fine small layout cadetpwr. The interesting building add a bunch. Exactly what size is your layout?

Very nice scenery, cadet. Who made that steamer you have running in those photos? It looks pretty sweet.

Really nice. Small enough to fit in a car and take to a train show, too.

The more I look at your layout, the more I like it. That nifty little switch back sets up a some very interesting switching problems in a very compact space. Are you still thinking of going with an 1800's theme? If so, remember, I got a potential buyer for logging equipment...but then, I have sold stuff I thought I didn't want any more and ended up shooting my foot off trying to replace it.

The rerailer/crossing is a AHM product, has a nice cobble stone road surface and if you find one new in the box, has manualy operated crossing gates that come with it. The steamer is a PFM/United brass imported Santa Fe 2-8-0, the most prolific brass engine ever with over 8000 imported. It was professionaly painted and constant lighting installed before I got it. I overhauled the open frame Pittman motor with new magnets, polishing the comuntator and a good strip and relubrication before all of those previous steps were preformed. I tried a can motor that I had on hand to see how well I could make the original motor run. It actual runs better in all aspects other than amp draw, which is just fine as well. At 10 volts pulling a 12 car train of the long Atlas propane tank cars, she draws 1/2 amp, if I hold onto the caboose and let her slip out, she will draw 3/4 amp. The can motor is below 1/2 amp all the time. But the open frame is quieter, has more grunt and the amp draw is well within limits of most decoders if I wanted DCC. There is enough head room once I pull the empty from the Co-op to fit the Connie and 1 forty foot car. The covered loading warehouse/factory receives 1 forty foot box car every couple days. I did email him about the saw mill, never recieved anything reply wise, maybe its going into his spam filter. If someone wants to link him to my forsale ad, please do. Need the sawmill gone. I have a PFM V&T ten wheeler coming to mess with. I may eventualy slide into a wild west era but it needs some work and I want to get rid of the tender mounted motor. Already got plans in my head how I will do this. Mike

Even then, that's not a whole lot of them. On top of that, I quite like how they look.

I am questioning whether I can make my layout a duel prototype layout by keeping the buildings of a general design, it will be a bit of fudge no matter what though since I like the AT&SF and V&T. Both in the steam era. I just got my brass PFM/Fujiyama caboose, was still sealed in the shipping wrapper bag, it had never been opened since it was imported in 1966 in a single production run of 500 pieces. Its not sealed no more, and the smell in the bag, that smell of brand new brass was wonderfull! I also recieved my V&T ten wheeler today as well, neither are painted yet, but that will change soon. Pics shortly. Mike

So, lets say I want to backdate this little layout to the early years of railroading. Power being the above ten wheeler and in time the matching brass 4-4-0. The little tan building with brown trim is a wild west era building. The rest are probably a bit to modern. V&T's #26 ten wheeler was delivered in 1907 to handle the boom in traffic from the Tonopah, NV mines. So obviously the lumbermill would need to become a mine structure to be serviced. Mike

I put a small Mashima can motor and dog bone style drive shaft in the #26. Runs a bit better but now the tender is to light and gets bucked off the track sometimes. Gonna have to put some ballest in the tender to compensate for the removal of the heavy open frame motor. Even with new magnets, the KTM open frame struggled to get the #26 moving smoothly from a stop. It was ok while running, but lacked enough torque to smoothly start the train. Mike
