My LOTW for this week is a circa 1980 Bachmann Western Pacific Daylight that we got from a seller which all the stuff he had there was locked up somewhere for more than 30 years. That means they're all pristine. On top of that, the locomotive runs better than I thought it would.Too bad it'll eventually get the cracked axle issue most Bachmanns suffered back in the day. It was a Christmas gift for my brother in case you guys were wondering why we bought it anyway.

A Hobby Town EMC E7 ABA set, still in box.
And a nice bonus with this set, the original box used to mail the set from Hobby Town to the buyer.

I know that. And they did that excursion about 10 years (if not more) after that model was made. On top of that, #482 actually exists! Check it out.

A friend of mine started to assemble this MDC Climax kit but came down with Parkinson's and can't finish it. He sold it to me, along with the book "Tuning for Beginners" for $15, a better deal will never come along.

Occasionally some thing comes along that you just cant pass up. This has been on my wish list for a long time so I couldn't believe when I saw this at a recent swap meet on a table with a sign that said "all brass 50% off". Not only got the half price deal but the guy knocked off another twenty bucks on top of it. So now I am the proud owner of a genuine brass Alco C-430. This is my LOTW!

Well, mine is not brass, but nice just the same. Two, in fact. I had to do a motor swap, as the RF-16 PT was trash. Both shells are perfect. Oddly, this is the first of its kind I've ever seen. Evan

Great pickin's Kovacste, and a very cool brother you have there. Retired Alex, never seen a Climax in red before. Tres bien. Those little loco's are a gas to work with. So sorry about your friend's illness. PGE: I will see my left kidney for that Canadiana, shell alone. If you ever want to turn it loose, contact me first. I can never find one on ebay. I grew up near Hamilton, eh.

Thank you, Chops.I just hope the cracked axle issue doesn't happen on that thing for many years. Do you guys know when that usually happens?

And the prototype has one light instead of two. Still, it's neat it actually has a prototype. Unlike the Chessie Daylight Bachmann also made.

I don't think there is any way to predict if and when it will crack the axle gears. I've had Bachmanns that were cracked pretty much right out of the box, and some that have been good for years. As I understand it the axle gears were molded incorrectly and were or became over time too small for the metal axle. Maybe there were a few good ones out there?

next questions are: How do you fix the cracked axle? What causes it to crack?

Alex, I've always thought the MDC box cabs and climaxs were cool to!

It's the axle gear that cracks, not the axle itself. There is no fix, other than replace the axle gear.
The plastic used in the gears had issues. It grew brittle, and wanted to shrink at the same time. The axle is metal and so the plastic cracked.

I know it's an acronym, but SEPTA still has an unfortunate similarity to the word septic. A company name just shouldn't sound like an infected wound.

I used to work for SEPTA ... and I agree about the shoe fitting ... nuff said.
I'll save the SEPTA paint (Toronto colors actually) for one of my PCCs. This Brill will get PTC colors.

RDC1, I'm glad to see you found at least one Brill body. You lucked out with the unpainted metal; no guilty feelings for covering someone else's vintage paint job!

Yes, right ... the poles and detail parts were still in the paper bag. I don't think it's seen much run time if any at all.
I'm having that kind of guilt with the double deck trolley I bought. It suffered some metal damage in shipping, so when I reassemble it, I either have to paint it or let the repairs show.
