My COTW this week is an Athearn Southern Pacific flat car with stakes and a home made load not yet tied down. The load is made from parts of an old windshield wiper blade.

I got "hooked up" with this next COTW on Saturday the 20th, at the Greenberg show in Richmond, VA. Will join either my NASCAR or AMC train consist eventually. For $6 , pretty reasonable! I was happy.

A flat car transporting an engine that has blown it's boiler. this is my first attempt at using a 2 part rusting system available from Scanlon Creek Scenery. Not perfect but I am happy with the results. Got to change to front retaining chain, I am not pleased the way the fastening to the car turned out.

I like your work with the flat car and blown locomotive Alex. The boards shimmed under the boiler look good. And that rust job looks good. Are those lighter spots (on the black boiler) bare metal? I'd almost think the boiler would be kinda greasy and dirty and corroded and no good bare metal would be showing? ? ?

Congratulations, you managed to find the actually-not-half-bad version of the Hershey's reefer Instead of Mantua/Tyco, this one was made by Train-Miniature, and is a little more accurate. Put that down for PA freight cars!

Sweet! It pulls nice too, but it's a little light. I'll be adding a bit more weight over the holidays.
And yup, I got it for the Pennsylvania theme!

Barry, I had just gotten the rusting system at a recent train show and was anxious to try it out so I just grabbed an old shell I had laying around. I am getting an airbrush kit for Christmas so will strip the engine and spray it grimy black and redo the rusting. I was amazed at how easy the rusting was to do and wanted to show it off. The 2 part system consists of a thick paint that contains very fine iron filings that is applied in 2 coats and when dry a weak acid solution is applied over it and rusts the filings. The initial coating is quite thick and doesn't run naturally, so it will take some experimenting to get it perfect to reflect how water would run down the boiler. Overall I am content with the results of a first attempt.

I have some British style locomotives and rolling stock and they couple up really well, the only issue is that it's hard to get them off.

Great old boxcar. There are plastic Athearn doors painted in that same color available on ebay for cheap that I used to resurrect an old Athearn metal NH boxcar I found. Not the same as the original metal but not a bad look until you come across the real thing.
