Picked up a Mehano Chessie Alco RS11 (thanks Islander for pointing out its an RS11, not a GP18) cheap off fleabay. The back end had damage on the stairs on one corner. Decided to give it a go at restoring it. Need to lose the plastic railings. The idea is to throw some PRR or CSX badges on it at some point. It runs pretty well.

The back left corner is where the stairs were replaced.

Thanks,
Tim

That's a great looking black paint job you've started off with on your RS-11. Do you usually letter for a specific line, or have you ever considered your own paint scheme? You could make it your own leasing company...

Thanks for pointing out the correct model. It looked like a GP18 at a quick glance.
I haven't lettered anything yet, but was looking to do Conrail, CSX, PRR, POCR. Basically those found around western PA the last 30-50 years.

Ahh, the Mehano RS11. Is this the 8wd unit?
These, IIRC, were one of the least costly 8wd diesels on the market in the 1990s. They were a little 'light-duty' compared to 90s Athearn, but they were even cheaper and they ran, and they were Alcos. I remember wanting one every time I read the Standard Hobby Supply mail-order pages in MR back then. Never bought one, but I did pick up the similar RS3 at some sort of surplus store in Pittsburgh (cool place, don't remember the name, but they had tons of old NOS Casadio track and Model Power diesels).
You could add striping and paint it as LAL 420, even though that's actually a high hood C420. It's a sharp-looking unit. http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=113&t=45934&start=0
With the LAL and WNYP it is Alco heaven around here these days...

Autobus, it is an 8wd unit. It was a little noisy until I used some lithium on the gears and it quieted down nicely.
Thanks for that link. That LAL 420 unit is nice. I may just paint some yellow stripes, get some chevrons and create LAL 420 for myself.
Thanks,
Tim

Nice repair job, Tim. I wouldn't have noticed if you didn't show the before photos.
I have 2 of the older 4 wheel drive versions. They put a lead weight in the front of the hood for the power truck that blocks the headlight, so the long hood is the end with the bulb. Not sure anyone ran them that way. I always liked the look of them, but the handrails are pretty hellacious.

I was gonna suggest PC too. Maybe even an early Conrail patch-job, on the theme of those PC-patched E-units we've seen recently...

Ewww, patchouts. Save that for a GE. Alcos are too attractive.

I'm shocked he hasn't said anything back about this yet.

I just saw this thread and the repair and paint look nice. I think maybe Nickel Plate had these ALCo's too. That would be a sharp paint job if you could manage the stripes OK.
