I wanna remotor my GG-1 and just haven't found a motor with a long enough tail shaft. What can be used? Some one on eBay has one, but, for $30 ?

I am resurrecting this ancient thread because I now find myself in the same boat. I need a motor for a GG-1; or at least the armature and magnet(s). I am trying to get one good loco out of 2 but I discovered that it appears the motor sat underwater or something. The rust in it was so bad it looked like a zinc-pest problem. Trying to get the worm off was fruitless and in attempting to get the crud away from the armature I wrecked the windings big time.
I found a solution with a can motor but realized the shell wouldn't go back on due to the height. Anyone ever cross this bridge?

Randy - assuming you are talking about a single-motor/vertical shaft GG-1?

Geez Jerry, yes, a Rivarossi single motor. I can't believe I didn't put that info in the post.

No problem! Just wanted to be sure. It sounds like an interesting project, and I figure at some point I'll get my hands on one of those and will want to fiddle with it.

Would an AHM C Liner motor work? Have any pics?

Hi Tim, I thought that very thing too. I tried the AHM motor but they will not fit into the chassis opening and #2 the shaft/worm needs to be fairly long the reach down into the truck far enough to fully engage the worm gears.
I thought I had it whipped by using a can motor, slipped inside the Rivarossi; bottom motor casing. I could have cobbled it together to work OK but realized that it would all stick up too high to get the shell back on. That's when I decided to punt and try to figure out something else.
The problems are;
Needs a very long shaft/motor is vertical
original motor had a oblong plate mounted on that allowed both shaft alignment and prevented the motor from spinning around in the chassis
motor overall needs to be relatively short

It may make it a bit noisy, but: http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/300-7040
With this, you can have a horizontal shaft driving a vertical shaft into the truck and use any motor you want! The gears take some tuning, but work very nicely. They also include a cross-box so you don't have to deal with the mesh. I have 4 sets of these driving the scratch built chassis in my Cary S-2! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNS56Qe-qpw
