Lighting up today's LOTW first, I found this Lionel/Athean E33 unit at the Timonium show, missing the pantograph, but otherwise complete. Haven't tried to fry, er, try it yet though. It's been repainted, but the original blue Virginian paint scheme is visible on the inside of the shell. Might try to strip it a bit to see if I can get the newer paint off. Anyway, the price was VERY right, couldn't pass up this one.

That paint stripping thing reminds me of another guy who tried that and ended up stripping off the original paint too. So basically, be careful.Anyway, my LOTW is my newest H0 scale locomotive buy. It's an Athearn 60th Anniversary GP-40X locomotive that I got at yesterday's train show for $30 as is.

This locomotive is very well detailed if you can't already tell and runs really good due to Athearn's flywheel drive. It's a great locomotive. Especially for the price I paid. So, does anyone else have one of these things? I have yet to see one of these things online. The locomotive, I mean.

Stephen - seeing it out of the box, I'll go ahead and say you stole it for $30. Incredible detailing and graphics. Would like a better look at the trucks on that thing.

That actually comes with it in the box as extra detailing parts. It has absolutely everything it originally came with in 2007.And yes, I will eventually add those parts and DCC it, especially with how easy they say it is.

Nice find there, man.I see those often at train shows but they demand way too much in my opinion.

I've been chomping at the bit to get that one finished! The only thing holding me back was that final momentous decision
I got that loco for next to nothing at a train show last year. Unpowered, undecorated P2K E7 with all the detail parts in their sealed baggies. Only downside was that the chassis seemed to be for an E6 or E8 - there was no way to afix the shell to it. So...I finally rigged up a couple of screws on each side of the fuel tank, along with some pads inside the shell for it to rest at the same height of the Con-Cor E7 it was going to be matched with. The Con-Cor shell is "slightly" off-scale on certain proportions of what I assume to be correct on the P2K shell, but on balance the rooflines match up and I think they work out OK.

This is my LOTW:

Athearn Amtrak Phase V AMD-103.
I got this basket case for $12 at the Ag Hall show. It didn't work, as it was missing a few parts , including all of its steps and it had a grounding problem. I was able to matched the paint color when I replaced the steps. It runs great and I added LED lighting in the nose.

Lots of nice stuff this week. JNXT, that E7 is kewl. I would have voted for the Tuscan patch, too.

Here's my Penn Line D1 Midget that Loopy sent me as a basket case project. I had to rebuild the commutator after all five plates flew apart on me.

It's back up and running now.

Hi guys,

Unfortunately I didn't snap any shots of the commutator repair process, since I honestly didn't think it would work. As you can see the motor had been subject to overheating, which is why the enamel on the windings is so dark. It also burned the fiber commutator form (the disk with slots in it) nearest the windings, so when I got it from Loopy and spun up the motor to test it that burned disk flew apart and all 5 sections went flying to different corners of the room.

That was the fun part, trying to track all of them down... I almost gave up.

Once I had them, I test fit them and then laid each one in place and secured it with thin Zap, then wrapped one or two turns of thread on the winding end to reinforce them, soaking the thread with more Zap to make it solid. Then I soldered the torn windings back onto the commutator lugs, which wasn't as bad as it sounds because there was enough length to work with. After that I saturated everything with Zap, including the windings to stabilize the enamel and keep them from developing an internal short. Then I cut away any excess glue from the plates, spun the armature in a drill and began polishing, starting with 400 grit. This was all done with it still in the motor frame... if I had to do it over again I'd use a keeper and remove it.

I don't remember now if I had to level the plates a little with a file or 220 grit first, because they did end up a little uneven. I've done that with other uneven commutators with some success, but polishing may have been enough.

Hope that makes some sense.

Nelson,
Thanks for the answer. I didn't know what would hold well and take the heat. It sounds like CA is the thing.

It definitely is, and the best I've found is Zap. I also used it to recreate the threads in the screw holes in the shell, because that lead alloy is really soft. It will tolerate normal motor heat too, and the open frames in these Midgets get pretty hot since they don't have adequate ventilation. The magnet seems strong enough, but it may get a rare earth transplant.

If the CA Zap doesn't hold, try the 5min JB Weld. It can stand temps up to 600oF.

The CA repair in the motor has been doing fine for over 5 years.

Not to start a controversy, but I'm not a fan of JB Weld, particularly for small work like this. I've never found an epoxy bond I can't break, and I was really disappointed with their 5 minute stuff and even their "steel' putty, especially after all the raves I've heard. The best epoxy I've ever used was the old green stuff putty that's hard to find now... that stuff held on like a bulldog, could be sanded & filed without letting go. Roco used to use it to balance their armatures. I remember repairing the worn piano key function buttons on my old cassette deck with green stuff when they wore and wouldn't latch down anymore. That green putty repair never wore out like the original plastic, even after many years of use.

More recently I tried repairing the worn hook that keeps my wall mounted cordless phone in it's cradle. I recreated the hook with JB Weld steel putty, thinking it had to be at least as good as the green stuff, but while sanding it to shape the %#^$ putty let go. I glued it back in place with... Zap CA. A year and counting, and it's still holding strong.

are they A-1-A trucks? They look to be SD45's, especially with the flared tail ends...
Unless they're the "newer" SD30C ECO's CP is running now with their 4400's.
