I have read pro's and later on, cons of doing the CD motor conversion to the power torque drive. What is the current opinion. I have read of issues with motor brushes going bad very rapidly. Lookin at options on my royal blue. trying to keep it looking stock from the outside. Worst case, I will do either the Bachmann 44 tonner power chassis into the tender or a NWSL Stanton drive. For now she runs well, but I want to be able to pull a decent load without worrying that I will kill the PT. Mike
Still NT's, I have Aspergers.

I have done the CD motor conversion on Tyco P/T drives and have had some success. In a Royal Blue steamer the motor has more room in the tender than in a diesel which needs to swing in the gimbal mount. That means you can use a bigger motor which I think is a plus. From the outside nobody will know that the conversion has taken place. The 44 ton or 70 tonner conversion is another good swap and is probably the best option if you can score a 70 tonner with the single motor and drive shafts versus the older 44 tonner with dual motors that can be problematic and also are geared for slow running. I have also used an Athearn SW type chassis for a Tyco steam conversion but you will have to find the longer tender shell to get it to fit. One option I have considered is looking for a newer Alco HH 660 switcher, I bet that would be a good fit and a really good runner.

I found that I have the upper gear box from a Mantua logging mallet. This, I think, will mate with the standard axle gear used on the 0-4-0 and similar small gear steamers. If I can get them to mesh, it would allow me to horizontaly mount a small can motor up inside the boiler and give smooth and quiet running. I have a nice pair of metal Mantua tender trucks. Is that shell shared with any Mantua engines where I can swipe a metal floor to replace the PT drive? Looking at all options right now. I picked up a junker 0-8-0 to use as a test bed, no tender, just the engine chassis with a junk/busted boiler on it. I thought I had an axle gear laying around, but I must have used it somewhere. Anybody got one they will sell/swap/donate to the project? Or a CD motor they can sell. Mike
