Just got back in to scale railroad modeling and inherited some HO items. This Tyco diesel switcher was missing a coupler and so I picked up some Kadee #5 couplers to fix it.

First step was to remove the pin that held the old coupler in place.

Find some screws sized accordingly. Not sure what size these are, they were from my model doo-dad scrap yard. And a drill and bit sized for the screws. This bit was actually smaller than what I needed, but was good for the pilot hole.

Drill out the holes (in this case, pilots for the larger bit).

I picked these eyelets up from HobbyLobby. They fit perfectly inside the #5 couplers.

Slide in the centering spring. It fits perfectly.

Slide the coupler into the slot, drop the eyelet into the hole, align everything and screw down. You may need to file the bottom of the eyelet some, but not so much that the screw then binds the eyelet with the coupler.

All done. Repeat for other end.

Thanks for looking, Tim

Tim, Great Job and well documented. You can also take the top of of the Kadee box and trim it to fit upside down in the TYCO box and you have a ready made spacer and holder.

I like what you did there, Tim. Those eyelets are an interesting addition, didn't think of that. I may have to get some to play with myself. :) Thanks for posting and sharing that.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn't any of those yet when I did this upgrade, but do now. I might have to use them on some of my other conversions.

I agree those eyelets are a creative solution.

When I put the shell back on the chassis, I had to remove the eyelet as the screw was hitting the weight. I might put the eyelet back on and file down the little round protrusion on the weight. I believe this little protrusion was there to help hold the horn coupler in place.
