Gorgeous loco, OT. Those original 3 pole open frames were real coffee grinders that cogged at slow speed, so you might consider a small can motor retrofit. It's an easy job that would be a snap for you.

I've been looking at upgrading the magnets in the motor first. Have some neos coming and want to see how they do on improving the performance. Have also considered getting a can with the shaft at both ends to see if it would be possible to put in a small flywheel. Will just experiment and see what happens. Have plenty of extra locos to play with.

This is an AHM motor, correct? What magnets are you using?
I've got some old AHM motors that I might want to upgrade.

I'm going to try some 1/2 x 1/4 x 1/8 inch neodymium N48 rare earth magnets. That's 12x6x3 mm.
It's the open face motor they put in their early production 4-4-0s.
