I picked up an old Athearn BB work caboose built kit at the September edition of the local model railroad club swap meet last month. It was lettered for the Boston & Maine- McGuiness era.
I always liked the bright blue color that the B&M ran in the 50s and 60s, and have a similar box car in the same livery.

Well, a little research showed how poorly Athearn followed the color scheme and lettering, so I got some B&M decals (can't make my own white ones- though I tried with white decal paper- comes out poorly and is hard to trim) and a can of Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X satin Wildflower Blue, as well as my trusty Walmart Flat Black and went to work. I know that the B&M Cabooses in the late transition era had red ends with white stanchions and such, but since this was a (fictitious) car to begin with and a work caboose, I figured that the shop crew would just paint the two dominant colors- black on the roof and blue for the rest of the car.
The trucks were sprung with individual springs and I opted to leave the original wheels on, because I didn't want to mess up the trucks with trying to intall metal wheels. I put on Kadee couplers, re-did the rear platform grab rail and put the decals where they belonged- as per my research.
The result:

Not an exceptional job- but the paint and decals are fresher and more acurate.
What it is doing in the upper midwest is beyond me!!!!

Back soon with another job.

Nice job, sioux. Looks like something Athearn would make today.

"A lot of modellers out there who go to these train shows see broken HO stuff and go, 'This is useless' when, in reality, they can still be used for modeling whether it's as a prop on your layout or a cool project to make something old new again."
