A passenger train for excursions that was operated by the Arkansas-Missouri Railroad collided with another train on Thursday.

That's just horrible. Likely there's extensive damage to the train in addition to what happened to the passengers. I just hope they all pull through.

The story said that the excursion train was losing traction on leaves, and the freight train was sent to assist. From there it gets confusing, hard to tell how it happened.

That's awful! Of course if this were a movie, the locomotive would've blown up and have been demolished down to frame, and the cars destroyed and piled up everywhere in flames, and then they would just ignore all those deaths!

Truly sad to hear. Our prayers go out to the injured passengers, and to the AM, who're going to have quite an ordeal ahead of them after an incident like this. Cue the cleanup crew, the NTSB, angry passengers, lower ridership, etc... I don't recall ever hearing of a wreck involving a tourist shortline's passenger train before though, is this the first such incident?

There was a wreck on a popular tourist train here in WV recently - just over a year ago, a logging truck ran into the train - killing a passenger: http://wvmetronews.com/2013/10/11/one-dead-several-injured-in-train-wreck/
The Cheat Mountain Salamander is still operating. http://mountainrailwv.com/

It's such a tragedy for something like this to happen. I sure hope everyone in that particular accident are gonna be okay.

Last time I was in WV (2003), the Salamander was a doodlebug. Any idea what became of that?

Not sure Sshaggy...I searched but didn't find much definite info. The Doodlebug was a new replica. See this link: http://www.sinfin.net/railways/world/usa/touristus/wvc/railbus.html
The success of the Cheat Valley Salamander was such that the operators sought a larger, more reliable and perhaps more appropriate vehicle; thus, a railcar was ordered from the Edwards Railcar Company of Montgomery, AL. Although newly built, its design and construction reflect that of similar cars built by Edwards in the early part of the 20th century for a number of small American railways. Railcar M-3 replaced LEV2 on the Cheat Valley Salamander service in 2000; LEV2 was sold to the Connecticut Trolley Museum, where it remains, awaiting restoration.
Following reopening of part of the line in 2013 after a 2 year closure to passenger trains for an environmental project, locomotive hauled trains were able to reach Spruce and there was no longer a requirement for a railcar in regular service. It is believed, however, that it remains in use when demand is low and is also available for private charter.
So it sounds like the "Salamander" is still there, and can be used on low volume days - but now that the section of track is cleared for locomotives, that's what they use now - I guess for the added passenger capacity.
