Rescued from a hobby shop $1 box. Has metal sides, roof and ends....the base is wood, and there is wood under the ends and roof. Varney? Silver Streak?

I have one very similar to that that I got at a train show yesterday. The only big difference right off the bat is that mine is Santa Fe instead of New Haven. Here's a photo of mine.

Diagnoses:
JNXT, it's either early Athearn or Globe, probably Globe b/c you can see the brass ends. No doors, and it's jacked up on too many washers so that Mantua couplers could be installed, but they're no longer there. You'll probably find two holes drilled where each coupler would have been mounted. Stirrup steps are missing as well, can't recall if this version had individual steps or one stamped piece on each end that had the step for either side. I seem to recall Varney made the same car number, but I could be wrong. Sometime I'll have to dig out my Varney NH cars to check...
Steven: your car is (I think) a Details West kit, an ATSF plug-door. Yours is missing the grabirons, at least 2 stirrups, and should be riding on bettendorf trucks instead of 70-ton roller-bearing trucks.

Thanks PRR - I had already removed the couplers, and yes each one was attached with two tiny nails. One had "Rail Line" embossed on it. I actually removed a set of washers, but had to leave one set on or it wouldn't take a curve without the flanges rubbing on the frame.
That's two votes for Athearn so far....

Ah, interesting. I'm not surprised it doesn't use some of the original parts to be honest. Still a nice freight car in my book.

JNXT
Toptrain is right, your New Haven Box Car was produced by Athearn or Menzies. The number on the Globe New Haven Box Car is 32985.

JNXT 7707, Not sure if I am able to rule out Globe due to a car number, because I was not around then and I do not have any detailed catalogs showing car numbers for either manufacturer, but being an avid New Haven collector, I have to agree it is either Athearn or Globe. I tend to lean toward Globe due to the brass ends as I do not recall the Athearn having brass ends.
Well that's my argument anyways. Someone shows me an Athearn kit with brass ends and I'll shut-up! LOL For once... anyway!

*applause* It lives! One thing I forgot to mention, and not to nitpick, but... the grab irons to the side are absent. Ordinary staples originally sufficed, or grab irons can be bought from Tichy at $3 for a pack of 100 (at least at my LHS), if you'd like to install them.

Thanks for the comments PRR, and good point, yes I did notice the holes where grab irons go and plan on fixing them too eventually. $3 a bag of 100? Not bad! Needs some stirrups too. But I mainly wanted to bring it to a presentable running condition for now.
