Had a look at a friends loco today. A used Bachmann China QJ 2-10-2. Really, a nice looking machine, but... When he bought it, he did not test run it! I don't know what he paid for it, but probably way too much. He's an impulsive "must-have" collector. Looking at the diagram, there is little hint as to removing the shell, so I didn't. In a nutshell, this is too much guesswork to inspect this thing without breaking brittle bits off. Motor runs but worm won't stay engaged with the drive gear. Now he owns a very pretty shelf sitter.
Anyone else tried working on a basketcase such as this? Evan

I have their SY Mikado, and getting it apart was impossible until I got help from someone who had already done it. There was a screw between the drivers that went up into a boss in the boiler shell, and even with the screw removed it took careful prying to pull the boss out of the frame. I don't see that in this diagram, tho.
The screws under the cab may hold on the rear of the shell, but beyond that it's hard to tell. There's a long screw in the frame that holds the front of the lower boiler casting. I'm surprised to see a split frame, even if it's just the boiler weight. I thought they had gotten away from that design.
I don't think the worm could come out of mesh unless the frame halves have separated. I would lean towards a split axle gear. If so, the driver(s) may be available from Bachmann, or he could send it in under the warranty replacement program.

Nelson, you could be right about the axle gear. It could be any of the other three as shown in the diagram, as well. I just feel as I am doing this as a favor only, I should stop now. It could easily turn into a case of "you busted it, now you owe me" situation. As I understand, Bachmann doesn't support the China products, but there are drivers available. The new owner will probably spend as much as it takes to fix this thing, even if it exceeds the real value of it. That's just how he is. Sorry, I ranted a bit. Evan

Northwest Shortline might have replacement gears.
