I got the loco with a broken crank pin. Unfortunately the crank pin was broken off so that I could not unscrew the rest of the thread. I drilled a new hole and tried to cut a new thread. Unfortunately, a rest of the old thread has fallen out and the hole was to big. The only solution was to drill a larger holel and insert a piece of brass tube. Then I cut a new thread into the brass tube ! Erich

That's a good save. Stuck threaded rod is a bear to remove. Sometimes if there is enough play, an Xacto blade tip can be used to carefully turn the rod, but usually when they break, they leave a nub behind which binds it, making it all but impossible to back out easily. Looks like you got it, though. :)

Nice work.
I've had pretty good luck drilling out broken side rod screws with a pin vise, and then use a pin, fine tweezers, etc. with a loupe to remove the remaining brass from the threads. It always amazes me that there's plenty of thread left for the new screw to grab if you use a small enough bit. Oil makes the drilling process a lot easier, too.
If the threads end up destroyed I just degrease and make new ones with CA, but I don't know if that method would be strong enough for a clamp style eccentric.
