I use resin. I made a mold of the coal in a Bachmann hopper and cast resin copies. The copies fit perfectly in the Tyco 4 bay hopper. You just have to paint the coal pile and glue in place with super glue. The casting is solid resin so it does add quite a bit of weight!

Interesting...Polyester two part resin ? How did U keep the cast from sticking to the mold car ? Wonder if spar varnish would work as it would be lighter...Thanks/FISH.

Yes, it is a 2 part casting resin. I currently use Alumilite. I remove the coal insert from the car. Then make an RTV rubber mold of the insert only. Then, 24 hours later, I pour the resin. The resin never touches the car. The insert is re-inserted into the original car. My silver Virginian 4 bay hopper rolls much better with the added weight. You could also bore a hole into the bottom of the casting to hold a magnet. A second magnet could them be used to pull the resin insert out to give you an empty car when needed.

Mike, I'd like to see some pics your homemade resin coal loads.

Believe I've used CM Shops 2-pack made for Athearn Quad Hoppers (Walthers #12-3104). They're $4.50 and I've had good luck dropping them in various 40ft. Open Hoppers.

Tony,
Give me a day or two. I will paint up a pile. The cream colored resin does not photograph well! The mold is off a Southern 40' 4 bay hopper from the near silver series.

Here are a couple photos of my cast coal loads.

The first photo is of the complete casting. The cream/white color is what the resin looks like prior to painting. I only paint the surface that will be visible. The second photo shows a close up of the molded surface texture. The RTV rubber mold will handle much greater detail then the Bachmann piece provided.
