My LOTW is up for, uh.. this week. Here it is anyway. A Bachmann Spectrum Doodlebug I got at a train show for $15. It runs ok but growls like an angry hound most likely because it needs oil.

Nice! I like doodles, they're fun to run. I have one myself, it's a C&O I think. Been awhile since I've looked at it, mean to DCC it eventually. It also has a red front, I believe.

I almost got one of those at my local train show for $50 in really good condition a year or two ago but for some odd reason, I turned it down.

Stephen Seeing as they go for $150 or more it was a good buy, considering that I waited to the VERY end of the show and he marked it down from $125 as he didn't want to haul it home. Got RP-25 wheels and a newer style can motor in it. She runs like a dream!!! She will be the start of my next project, the 1938 20th century limited.

This beautiful GG1 is my loco of the month. As you can see it is one of the new Bachmann units and they are finely detailed. This is the Brunswick single stripe, but I have the 5 stripe coming. Later I plan on getting the Congressional silver and the black Penn Central. The Tuscan does not peak my interest so that will be last on the list.

Toptrain, isn't that the engine you were working on in the kitbash section? If so, it turned out really nice. Oh, and Chops, thank you for volunteering to help me out if I need help with the Doodlebug. I appreciate it. Speaking of parts, Chops, do you happen to have any spare cowcatchers that I can fit onto my Bachmann Doodlebug? I know where it goes because I've seen pictures of the model and there's little spots where they used to be.

I am not sure if one would call it "chaos" or "ingenuity," but in its later days the Penn Central was lashing up anything that would still run, so this oddballian consist has prototypical merit.
As to Doodle Bugs, as per my PM, yes, and I will be finding it shortly. Terrific project and a helluva find.
Lastly, that scratch built Diamond Express is astonishing. I hope that we will get to see it with its passenger consist.

Thank you Glenn. I tried to massage the look of the Bachmann a bit to match the P2K - but that vermillion patch? There was a scratch there and I attempted to match the paint to fix it. Wasn't a great match but turned out to be a great "patch" This is why I love model railroading.

Here's something from when Bachmann was first starting to get "good"...
It's a Bachmann Plus Santa Fe Consolidation steam locomotive! It runs pretty well, and the smoke unit works pretty well, but I find it best to not let it sit still for long, because when on a DCC unit it continues to smoke... or would that make it look more realistic? It does struggle a bit in one area of the layout when pulling a certain amount of cars... how could I fix this up? (Maybe some bullfrog snot?)

nice looking loco wiley. When you say it struggles, do you mean the wheels are spinning? If so I would see if there's any way to add weight first. Have not had any experience with BS.

At rest, locomotives mainly smoke when you feed them fresh coal. When they're working very hard, they'll smoke it up a bit even when not freshly stoked. The most smoke is when you're adding coal and working hard. When you're burning fully ignited coal at rest or when just cruising along, the stack is pretty clear. In cool or humid weather the steam will show in a clear stack when the locomotive is moving.
Regarding Bullfrog Snot, it's a rubber coating that will reduce your electrical pickup by the number of drivers coated. Avoid it if there's another option that works.

I got one of these with Reading markings last weekend at a train show for $35. They do run much better (not to mention quieter) than the old pancake version.
As for the smoke unit, I just remove them. They are completely open, so any excess oil dumps out inside the loco when put into storage. I've also seen quite a few with melted stacks. It runs full bore on DCC because DCC has a constant 15 volts through the rails, which will be more likely to melt the shell. The only way to control it would be with a decoder, and you would have to insulate the smoker from the frame halves and wire it to an accessory output on the decoder.
If you remove it, that gives you extra room to add a lead slug for more weight.

As for the smoking when not running feature, I think that actually makes the engine look and act more realistic. I don't see why you think it's bad.

Me too, Barry. I think they are much more majestic than diesels. Although diesels are cool, most of them just don't match the beauty that steam locomotives have.

If you compare it to a real steam loco in action the smoke looks anything but realistic. They are fun, but tend to make a huge mess of wheels & rails in HO, and the oil can be bad for plastic parts (a lot of old Chattanooga boilers have become very brittle). I think they are best suited for S scale and larger, which is why I break out the American Flyer once in a while.
