Here's what it looked like before in the set I got it in.
And here it is so far.
Basically, I got some Styrofoam and cut it. Then, I took the wheel sets off of the caboose and there you go. I'm not going to glue it until I paint the Styrofoam thing I'm putting on it. I sure you're asking "Why do you need a base to put your caboose on?" and the answer is the fact that without the base it would lean a lot and it would be a pain to cut of the little box thing on the bottom. Anyway, what I plan to do is have that caboose as the drive in itself. There will be a sign either on or besides it saying "Arnold's N-Scale Drive-In" with the Arnold Rapido logo behind it and underneath those letters, it will say "Est. 1963" because that's about how old it is.

Thank you. I got that bridge with a wooden shed that a friend in the train group I'm in gave to me a year or two ago. I've already used the shed as barn. I'm also thinking of using that bridge on another layout at some point.

I'll make sure to get a picture of it once it's on the layout which should be in a few months or less.

I know, right? I didn't want to put it into a bin never to be used for anything just because of a broken axles so I decided to do this project. What I'm going to do with those axles is put them by the tracks or something and weather them.

very resourceful! I think that is one of the things that sets us Tyco modelers apart is that we often find those old fashioned solutions that the modelers from the past used. It is not about out spending each other.

Agreed, I give you a big thumbs up for that! Some of my most rewarding projects have been the result of digging through my scrap box to find missing parts for those items that you mention. It is so satisfying to bring something back to usefulness after it has been written off or neglected by others.quote: quote:very resourceful! That's how I'm feeling about using this caboose as a drive in. I'm feeling happy to make it something usable again but this time as something different from what it was intended to be. I'm also using the name of the drive in to preserve it's past somewhat.

Pretty cool Stephen. Was checking out the other thread with the prototype caboose attached to a diner building - are you going to do that or let the caboose stand alone as the cafe?

I've had some change in plans. Instead of doing a caboose attached to a drive in, I'm going to do a drive in where the caboose windows are the pick up and order windows and stuff like that.

Very cool project! I have seen many of those railcar diners in real life, and I finally got to build one recently at the request of a friend, who gave me an American Flyer S gauge caboose to convert. Little details like awnings, a rooftop sign, a take-out window and menus by the door can go a long way towards making any car look like a functioning diner. The sign looks great, I like the Arnold/Rapido logo on it behind the diner logo.

Thank you, Chessie. After I'm done with the project, I'm going to do a before and after thing showing the caboose as it was when I first got it and how it looks on the layout.

Ok, guys. I finally got the billboard that will be in front of the diner done. Here it is.
First things first. The reason why I painted it red was to fit the color of the base and the caboose itself. Plus it looked terrible before I painted it. Second of all, the billboard looks kinda beat up and overall bad because it's supposed to be old and somewhat run down since it's supposed to be 50 years old. I'm also planning on weathering it and stuff like that so it will look so much better when it's finished.

Anyway, just now I cut the sign so that it would fit on the top of the caboose similar to how a lot of drive ins/diners do it. Here's how the billboard looks now. (I'll touch it up.)

Alright guys, I finally glued the sign and the base to the caboose and now it's ready to be glued down to the train box I'm building for it and weathered. Here it is as of now.

Alright, guys. I finally got my first update on this project in ages. I just got the dirt down on the section of the T-Track box I'm using for the caboose drive in. Here's some photos of it so far.

And no, this is not the finished product. I'm going to touch it up and of course add more grass, trees, etc. This is just the basic idea of how it's gonna look. It's not even close to the finished product.

I'll probably add that at some point whether it's after it's done as an add-on or as I'm doing this. Or maybe not at all. Neat idea nonetheless.

I finally decided if I'm ever going to do that crossbuck idea. I just ordered a pair of N scale crossbucks to put around the drive in which will get to my home by Tuesday. I'll show you guys the crossbucks and what I do with them so don't worry.

Thank you. I do have to do some touching up on the layout section itself but the drive in itself is done.

Anyway, guys, don't think this thread is dead yet because I'm going to post this layout section at my local fair which should be in a week or two. Also, I found a drive in that looks very similar to my caboose drive in online!

I may also take some pictures of it actually operating at the fair itself when I work there starting Saturday.

Wow Stephen - looks even better now. Funny thing, when I had my layout 'on the road' at some fairs and festivals, I had a similar 'can you find?' sheet printed out that we passed out to kids. They had a lot of fun trying to find everything

That's where I get my inspiration from, actually.

I may also take some pictures of it actually operating at the fair itself when I work there starting Saturday.

Cool looking scene, especially with the grass, trees, people and other details added. I like the crossbucks and gates, they give the diner a 'railroad' theme.

That's exactly why I did that actually. Microbusss recommended that and I thought it would complete the layout section so I did that.
