Mantua caboose, circa 1947...still one of my favorites, kept as is save for adding Central Vally truck bolsters as the originals were missing.

Nice cars so far, guys! My COTW is an old Athearn caboose which dates back to around 1957 to 1961 or 1962. Forget exactly but it's from the late 50's, early 60's I know that much.

Jerry, Roundhouse (Athearn)? has some newer versions that have constant lighting and window sillouhettes, which are fantastic--but expensive. These are older kits. I like the upper window gilding, but I couldn't decide what to do with the lower windows, so I put the tissue paper over them because there was too much empty space inside with no interior. On the next ones I might try something else. The 101 Ranch was a real Oklahoma Wild West show with an interesting history. Btw, I did put the clear plastic windows in first, with the tissue behind!

Have never seen any 101 Ranch cars before. Interesting! I like the look, and the tissue paper works. I have tried "frosting" the inside of glass with dullcote on cars with no interiors, not quite sold on that but no bad either. I recently finished a couple of those Roundhouse cars that I got as basket cases. Finished them in Pullman green and got those gilded window treatments off a Microscale Palace Car decal sheet. Wouldn't mind having an observation car like that to kind of complete the set

Bought this Mantua Burlington hopper car today at the New Hope train show. I used a photo technique perfected by one of the forum's members with some added background objects to make the scene more interesting.

That round top is really eye-catching. Be interesting to know a bit more about that design and how long they used it. That Michigan Central road name is pretty cool as well. I had a great-grandfather that worked for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern along about 1900. That was another road that was acquired by the NYC.

Note, especially, the part about express reefer. Early in the history of refrigerator cars, they were a particular length (I think 36 feet) and refrigerated warehouse dock doors were spaced accordingly. As other cars got longer, reefers stayed short to match the dock doors until a much later date.
The nonstandard length and the high speed trucks mark this as an express car in a fast passenger train rather than in normal freight service. It's a beautiful model, too.

I'm just going to use this as my COTW, I would have never know it was a rare TYCO until I seen it on GIC site a few years ago. Can anyone tell me what set this may have went to?

I can't imagine what set that Amtrak caboose would have come with, unless it was just a single-car offering, or just sold in a loco/caboose combination. My first inclination was to think it was a Pemco or IHC offering after the Tyco era.

I remember shopping at Woolworth when I was a kid and I loved it because I picked up a Lionel HO scale operating crane. I seem to remember that the one in my neighborhood also carried some Athearn trains. I have never seen one of these Woolworth cars but I would love to find one now!quote:The AHM Woolworth car...
